Woman delivers baby streetside with help of BPD sergeant

Around 5:10 p.m. on Centre Street at Mozart in Jamaica Plain. The baby girl just wasn't waiting for the ambulance to arrive; she appeared moments before the EMTs, with the help of Sgt. Rene Sanchez.

Boston Police report:

The sergeant was backing up officers on a traffic stop when a man came running over towards him telling him that his wife was in labor. The husband and wife had been attempting to drive themselves to the hospital when they realized that they were not going to make it in time. The sergeant ran to the car and called for an ambulance as he prepared to deliver the baby. “I just thought back to what they told us during our training in the Academy and kept updating EMS”, he said, “I told her, push, push, hold my hand and push!" In a matter of minutes, the miracle occurred. When the sergeant noticed that the umbilical cord was wrapped around the baby’s neck, he quickly made efforts to safely unwrap it. Since both of his hands were occupied, he asked the father to press the button on his microphone as he continued to advise the responding medical personnel. It just so happened, because of this act of teamwork and uncanny timing, the baby’s first cries were transmitted over the radio for all the officers on the district to hear.
