When Storrow Drive flooded like Morrissey Boulevard

The Globe today posted a photo from 1955 by Boston-based photographer Ted Polumbaum showing guys jumping into the Charles River - from the far side of the then "modernized" Storrow Drive, which had become part of the river.
Also see a more bucolic Embankment Road in 1929.

No, the 1929 photo isn't "Storrow Drive"
The 1929 photo is of a road called Embankment Road, more recently (1990s?) renamed David G. Mugar Way in honor of the benefactor of our 4th of July galas.
Storrow Drive didn't exist until the 1950s, and even today it officially extends only from Mugar Way (near Arlington Street) to University Road (near the Boston University Bridge). And it's officially called James J. Storrow Memorial Drive.
Many people think that the entire roadway on the south side of the river is all Storrow Drive, but it has several names along its length, including Soldiers Field Road, Soldiers Field Road Extension, and even a part of Charles Street (north of Cambridge St. and the T station).

Irony: James J Storrow was
Irony: James J Storrow was all about creating public space on the Charles River embankment, but didn't say anything about a road. After his death, his widow Helen spent the rest of her life advocating against building a road along the embankment. So after she died, we built it and named it after them.

I believe Charles River's
I believe Charles River's 2020 plan was all about changing it back, and opening up more turnpike exits in the city to counteract traffic effects. too bad it never got anywhere.
