At some point, the brush near Roxbury Latin should burn itself out, no?

Boston firefighters are back in the woods between Roxbury Latin School and the bird streets in West Roxbury, where the brush has burst into flames again.

A BFD spokesman says officials have "no idea" why the brush keeps catching on fire when other parts of the city that usually see brush fires - including the nearby Stony Brook Reservation - have so far remained fire free over the past couple of weeks.

1. Passing smokers throwing away lit butts
2. Kids lighting fires
3. The area is a dried-up peat bog, and the fire keeps burning under ground. (This seems unlikely. The FD would probably know about such a thing.)

BFD is one of the best, if not the best, fire fighting organizations in the country. They certainly are knowledgable enough to know if these were re-emerging from fires burning underground and would mitigate the situation.

At the risk of sounding like a conspiracy nut, just seems to me someone (s) is/are trying to make a statement. Certainly looks like attention seeking behavior.

After the rain we got last week I checked the soil at the edge of the yard. I had to dig down with a trowel exactly 1 inch before reaching soil that was absolutely bone dry going down. I mean literally zero moisture - none. Smoldering along roots and humus in these conditions can be nearly impossible to detect or extinguish and it could easily flame up. I strongly suspect that's the case there.

The question wasn't why that particular area keeps having fires, it was why that particular area keeps having fires but the other areas that usually burst into flames when somebody looks at them funny are staying flame-free.

Given what the DCR Fire Warden has been saying of late, it might be rebounding because it is burning into the ground and reemerging.

The creature in the sky
Got sucked in a hole
Now there's a hole in the sky
And the ground's not cold
And if the ground's not cold
Everything is gonna burn
We'll all take turns
I'll get mine, too
