UPDATE: Jamaica Plain News reports on the exact cause. A giant block of granite was involved.
Late last night, a water main blew its gasket at Centre Street and South Huntington Avenue, flooding the intersection and knocking out water service to much of Jamaica Plain - leaving many residents this morning no way to take showers or make coffee.

And few people realize that some cars have their air intakes quite low under the car - drive through a foot of water and you're going to suck cold water directly into your engine.
