State investigating possible school-bus sexual assault on a 7-year-old - by a 6-year-old

The Globe reports on a Nov. 3 incident on a BPS bus transporting students at the Boston Renaissance charter school in Hyde Park, in which a 6-year-old allegedly sexually assaulted another student repeatedly.

The school itself issued a statement:

We are aware of the Facebook post that has been circulating regarding an alleged incident on a school bus earlier this month.

We can assure all Boston Renaissance families that the school leadership team took immediate action and followed appropriate legal protocols, contacting law enforcement immediately upon learning of the issue. We have taken this matter very seriously and have taken appropriate measures to ensure student safety. We have also taken the appropriate steps to protect the privacy of the children who were involved.

This is a highly sensitive matter. We ask our school community to respect the privacy of our students and families, and allow the school to handle this appropriately.

Anybody who's ever spent more than 15 seconds on Facebook will be able to find the account the school references. I have not posted it because I have no idea if it's true or not, and we're dealing with kids here. I'd request folks not post it, either.

I must be one of those people who didn't see it :-) (nor do I want to either)

Then again my feed these days is all political posts and people freaking out, and the occasional cat picture.

If this story turns out to be true pray for the victims and their families. Any adult who knew of these allegations and tried to ignore them or worse sweep them under the rug should be fired or criminally prosecuted.

I heard bad things about this school before the recent allegations, I'm surprised this school hasn't been closed down yet.

Why hide what happened.

It's one Facebook post with no way of verifying its authenticity, at least not by a low-rent operation like mine.

The Globe interviewed the mother of the victim; I've updated the post to point to its story.

I don't have FB account and the Herald story didn't have what the Globe reported. -Bugs

The allegations are pretty horrible. But I hafta confess, I don't get it... Can a 6 year old commit sexual assault? That is, to what degree does the 6 year old know that the conduct is sexual? It can't be motivated by any kind of sexual impulse, right? I find this equal parts disturbing and confusing.

However, they are really not responsible for and not aware of how bad those things are. This is extremely tricky.

The really sad thing: when kids do things like this to other kids, it is often a sign that some adult in their life has abused them in a similar fashion. That's why these incidents need to be reported and investigated, not because a six year old can be punished in any meaningful way for their actions.

The 6 year old should not be punished I agree. But CLEARLY something very f'd up has happened in that child's life and the parents need to be DEEPLY investigated until the source of this child's behavior is determined. This is not something you pick up from watching TV. It's pathological abuse and the only way a 6 year old is repeating that behavior is because it has happened to them.

The child deserves evaluation and services, yes, and probably needs to be in an environment with more structure and a lot of observing eyes, so everyone can be safe and successful.

But it's not always an indicator of abuse, and if there was abuse, it didn't necessarily happen at home or due to anything the parent did or didn't do. We need to make sure kids are getting help, but not jump to conclusions that can have devastating impacts on kids and families who are already hurting. We need to remember that kids can be born with disorders that make them impulsive, not know right from wrong, not understand social appropriateness, have obsessions they can't control, be angry and wish harm upon people, not understand consequences of their actions, and so forth.

So a 6 year old would just know what oral sex is on their own? I doubt it...i had someone in school tell me what it was at age 9 and i didnt believe it to be true because i couldnt imagine people doing something so disgusting. I think the kid is

A. Being abused

B. His parents or someone is doing this in front of him which is abuse basically

C. Someone is wathing porn around him which is abusive.

Whatver the case id beat the sh*t out of this kid's parents if he did anything to my kids. This is NOT normal. It is indeed the parents fault

Don't you watch Law & Order SVU? :-)

Hey don't knock SVU.. many of their story lines are ripped from the headlines.

Truthfully, it can happen. And as swirly said above, its usually a sign that they have been abused themselves.

are all over the place (Grab her by the "you know"), are we surprised when kids pick up on it?

I think the kid committing the acts is most likely being abused at home--or somewhere. I can't imagine a 6 year old (as I have an almost 5 year old) coming up with this on his own. The parents should have been notified right away. What if this was going on in bathrooms, classrooms or playground? It may not have just been on the bus. Regardless, the bus driver needs to be prosecuted--- the kids was hitting the other kids that wouldn't do what he asked. He had to have heard the ruckus. You pull that bus over and investigate whats going on! Makes you wonder what else they have not notified parents about...

Disgusting that the charter school tried to cover this up thus not giving parents a chance to make the decision whether or not their small children should take the bus with a young sexual predator.
