Watch South Boston grow - from space

Google has, of course, created a viewer that lets you watch South Boston develop through satellite images taken between 1986 and 2016.

Hope if worked for everyone else, but my computer only showed a spinning wheel on time-lapse.

Close to transportation, close to the urban core, building up instead of out, and lying near the airport.

In the good old days, say 1991, you could drive Northern Avenue at about 50 MPH on a Tuesday afternoon only having to avoid the occasional fish truck. Today is better from an ecological standpoint

The build up of South Boston, The New York Streets, Assembly Square, The Fenway, and good chunks of the former Chelsea Fire sites is adaptive reuse of underutilized real estate. Very few duckies and bunnies were killed to develop this real estate and the harbor is cleaner than the 1840's.

People now get to live in what was half empty warehouses and truck parking lots, not old farmland.

Las Vegas is rather remarkable.

Atlanta is remarkable too.. even zoom'd out you can see the rapid build out over the 80s and 90s.

PS - your link doesn't work :-)

The link the poster had above.. it links to South Boston, not the intended Las Vegas

It's a "feature" on the page. In order to "share" a new location, you have to click the "Share and Embed" link in the lower right hand corner to get the new URL.

Atlanta, so fun that the Braves decided to move to Cobb County. I, for one, realize how good we have it in the Boston area.

Is South Boston not one of the 24 places in the YouTube playlist? The one featured is Miami...

Pretty clear imaging of the human race as a constantly spreading cancer on Mother Earth. What does she have in store for us to stop or decrease the spread of the disease that is people?

Rising sea levels are what is in store for us. South Boston will be shrinking and flooding, not growing, later on this century.

If you use that tool to look at the entire United States, it appears to me that you can see the US drying out progressively (judging by the ever-increasing amount of brown land) from around 2010 to present.
