Mass. Eye and Ear to become part of Partners HealthCare

Massachusetts Eye and Ear is already physically smushed into Mass. General. Today, it's announcing plans to merge into the holding company that runs Mass. General and Brigham and Women's hospitals.

Mass. Eye and Ear will keep its name and its own executives, board of directors, doctors and staff. The deal will require approval of state and federal regulators.

They held out for quite some time, especially since they are smushed into MGH like you said.

Any reason to think state regulators will not be happy with an expansion of Partners in the Boston area?

Partners and Mass Eye and Ear have had a close working relationship for decades. I bet most people think they are already together....I did for years.

In addition to their close proximity to MGH, Mass Eye and Ear also has a "new" building a block from BWH on Huntington that both institutions share.

Partners has been doing MEEI's billing for a number of years already (as they do DFCI), so there is already a deep relationship there. In terms of mergers, this will be relatively simple.

Years ago, my high-tech company was bought by Compaq, right after it sucked up DEC. I went to a huge computer and network convention shortly after. Compaq was the largest exhibitor and as I walked under the floor-wide COMPAQ banner at the entrance, one of their reps greeted me. He looked at my Microcom name tag and through a huge grin said, "Welcome to the Borg."

Partners is so big that they can demand higher prices from patients than comparable hospitals.

This merger is anti-competitive and bad for the public.
