Federal court halts Trump’s immigration ban.

Anybody know if this only applies to one particular judicial district (in this case, basically Brooklyn and Queens, because it's a ruling on a habeas-corpus request from the two people detained at JFK) or nationwide?

up

As ZZ Top sings, it's nationwide. This is according to the director of the ACLU's Voting Rights Project twitter account.

But as I understand it, it only applies those currently detained or in transit.

But appears that it only applies to those in port or in air.

OMG they messed up traffic IN THE HARBOR??????

If you don't like it, well, too bad. The constitution protects freedom of assembly. It says nothing about inconveniencing anybody or traffic or whathaveyou.

Every time there is a protest, I can count on somebody making comments like this on here. Do you understand the point of a protest? They aren't meant to be convenient. They're meant to be noticed.

He should be ordering state police to take custody and bring these folks to Boston city hall.

The president issued an unconstitutional , unlawful order. Lets go Baker, do the right thing. Earn your re-election.

President Trump has signed an executive order that bans citizens from seven Muslim-majority countries in the Middle East from entering the United States for 90 days, according to the White House. His proposed list doesn’t include Muslim-majority countries where his Trump Organization has done business or pursued potential deals. Properties include golf courses in the United Arab Emirates and two luxury towers operating in Turkey.

Gosh, I wonder why people from those Muslim countries aren't banned. Remember which country ALL of the 9-11 terrorists were from?

Correction: Only 15 of the 19 Sept.11 terrorists were Saudis. None of the other 4 were from countries on Trump's banned list. In fact, no one from any of those countries has killed anyone in the US.

Also, according to memes on the Internet (and of course those are always reliable) - none of the countries listed are the source of any terrorists who have launched attacks in the U.S. Whereas those countries that were exempted (in which Trump does his bidness) have citizens who have attacked us, like Saudi Arabia...which is also the country which funds more terrorists acts than even we do. And yet BOTH parties seem to like fondle Saudi balls, so I guess the fact the Trump does as well shouldn't come as much of a surprise.

I for one would love to the oil run out on them (or that we completely convert to some other energy source) so that we can ignore them and leave them to buried by the sands.

Green energy employs more Americans than gas and coal combined, and we could move to it with oghtly higher energy costs. Cap and trade, or tax, and it would even be a wash for the masses.

We could be off middle east oil in 48 months. We choose not to. 1/2 the electorate votes for staying on whale oil / horses.

I'm all with you on the need to move away from non-renewable sources but where is it factually stated more people are employed in green energy related industries?

The US should not subsidize the oil/gas industries. Let everything else take it's course.

Forbes just ran an article about a DoE study that shows exactly that.

From the article:

"...In the United States, more people were employed in solar power last year than in generating electricity through coal, gas and oil energy combined. According to a new report from the U.S. Department of Energy, solar power employed 43 percent of the Electric Power Generation sector's workforce in 2016, while fossil fuels combined accounted for just 22 percent. It's a welcome statistic for those seeking to refute Donald Trump's assertion that green energy projects are bad news for the American economy."

The term energy encompass far more then just electricity, such as oil for vehicles, industrial uses, etc.

This DHS travel restriction implemented under Obama involves the exact same seven countries as the Executive Order issued by Trump.

Because the Obama order didn't cover people with green cards or previously issued visas, so you didn't wind up with things like professors at American universities being locked in a room at Logan for several hours or five-year-olds kept from their mothers or refugees with visas approved by the US government turned back after they'd already sold their possessions and homes.

You're comparing Obama restricting the use of the Visa Waiver Program to the whole-scale denial of people due to their country of origin by Trump!

In fact in the link YOU brought up is exactly this quote:

The new law does not ban travel to the United States, or admission into the United States, and the great majority of Visa Waiver Program travelers will not be affected.

This is the antithesis of what was occurring this weekend as a result of Trump's ban. You are either naively puppeting something you learned on Fox News/Breitbart or you're disingenuously attempting to link the two in order to fool people who don't read deeper than the surface of your comment into thinking this is the equivalent as what was done before. It's not and you're either stupid or a liar.

AND even if it were the same, we've been fed bullshit by Trump and his administration for years now that what Obama did wasn't sufficient, yet your claim is that "Obama did it" so Trump doing it should be fine too....well, which is it? Was Obama sufficient and Trump was a liar before or is Trump doing something different and you and Trump are liars now?

This is the actual text of the Executive Order, which does not name any countries:

It references the countries named in the Visa Waiver Program Improvement and Terrorist Travel Prevention Act of 2015 that Obama signed into law.

For the protesters there are a number of their complaints which could be extended from Trump to the previous Obama administration on immigration and refugee issues without much of a difference. Trump does represent a new and exciting level of debauched xenophobia, race-baiting and religious/cultural chauvinism and intolerance, but Obama certainly was no picnic. Just ask any drone-bombed wedding party or refugee waiting for entry for a few years. Both parties have some serious issues when it comes to foreign policy -- which is why the "Trump, Hillary ...meh what's the diff?" attitude is one that holds more weight internationally than domestically.

The add-on to this for the protesters is that when people like Elizabeth Warren shows up to your rally, you really should drag her over the coals with some pointed questions about these pre-existing policies and her party's lack of response to its base after the elections. When she looks hurt you can tell her "What? You want me to waste our time praising you for being better than Cheeto-Hitler?"

The key piece here is that our country has had law and case law in place for over 50 years. Even Teen Vogue found some Pence tweets from late 2015 calling such policies out as illegal.

Look up the 1965 Immigration and Nationality Act for more information on the limits of exclusion.

Sen. Warren says "we will not turn away anyone because of their religion" so I look forward to her bill condemning the lopsided 500,000 to 1,000,000 Syrian Muslims admitted in FY '16 compared to the 56 Christians. Even her hapless predecessor John Kerry admitted that Syrian Christians were targets of ethnic cleansing, so I'm glad Kerry and Warren seem to agree with President Trump that change is needed. Bravo!

Has it occurred to you that maybe that had something to do with the number of people who applied?

Of course not - that sort of "argument" only sticks in your head when talking about why minorities are underrepresented in a certain line of work.

Your reference to popular vote, irrelevant in any U.S. Presidential election, merely shows the genius of President Trump and his pursuit of the Electoral College, campaigning in formerly Democrat states where Mrs. Clinton couldn't be bothered. Smart for Trump to write off California, New York and most of New England although his rallies were packed there also. She couldn't fill a kindergarten gym.

I appreciate the many suggestions to "get help" but I couldn't be happier so far. We can agree on one thing, the world isn't a scary place. As a new friend at the inaugural said, "God works in strange ways, even when the media says Hillary has an 88% chance of winning on election day." As Gov. Deval Patrick often said, "we're going to be fine."

So I see you bought the "I could of won the popular vote if I wanted to" line. Still think Trump is a genius? Newsflash, we live in Steve Bannon's America. If you think this strategic, dare I say blitzkrieg of activity isnt being orchestrated by him your crazy. But you keep drinking the kool-aid. I suspect that if the election were held today he'd lose by a larger margin vote and probably in the electoral college too. Of course life doesnt work like that, he won and that's that. On the bright side, Republicans are now able to roll out their agenda for the country in full, and will have to own every bit of it. They won't be able to blame anyone else. The last time that happened our financial institutions collapsed and the country elected Barack Hussein Obama. Long term I don't think that this will end well for them. Especially considering Trump was one last FU from salty white baby boomers.

Why do you lie so much Fish? You keep getting caught in lie after lie here. Are you well?

Your ridiculous numbers above, for example. The real number of Syrian refugees admitted to the US last year was a record breaking...15,479.

You can confirm with the government report from the DoS's Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration. (You'll have to adjust their fiscal year reporting to calendar year).

and kill thousands, maybe 10s of thousands of Syrians. She encouraged the civil war there and urged continued funding of the head choppers.

Another example of partisan hypocrisy that makes it hard for me to take any protesters seriously.

You encourage a country to be wrecked, and then pat yourselves on the back for letting a few come here where they have no prospects.

Ever think that one of the reasons she lost was specifically due to her hawkish ways? Unless you agree with absolutely everything Trump is doing it's pretty hard to criticize someone for voting for Clinton even if they disagree with one of her policies. Had she won there would have been plenty of protests just as Obama faced protests too.

She was the lesser of two evils. The last few months have shown just how much of an evil disparity there is between the two candidates.

When you finally have zero ground to stand on in order to defend the current atrocity of the Republicans, you can always point to someone completely unrelated to the current problems and hope to avoid the active discussion completely.

This isn't about Hillary.
