Former healthcare exec and state budget czar running for governor

Jay Gonzalez

In addition to former Harvard Pilgrim CEO and Weld-administration budget czar Charlie Baker, that is. Jay Gonzalez, former Celticare CEO and Patrick-administration budget czar, announced yesterday he's running for governor in 2018 - as a Democrat.

Before we see a clash of the health-insurance titans, though, Gonzalez, a Needham resident, might have to beat Newton Mayor Setti Warren, and whoever else might run, in the Democratic primary next year.

Different from your headlines announcing the last Healthcare CEO's run for Gov. Bias mush?

Because in looking at the stuff I wrote about Charlie Baker, I never wrote anything about him announcing he was running for governor in 2014. Oh, don't fret, I didn't write about Coakley declaring her candidacy, either.

Sorry about the memory problems. I find some coffee helps.

... and have always found him to be a man of integrity.

Take this anonymous coward's word for what it's worth, I suppose.

Has a better chance of being reelected than Warren in liberal MA. That says a lot....

Look what that poll reflects, and the tortuous wording.

Also note that Baker has been hiding in his Bat Cave and making small noises about watching TV of things or something. Ain't going to help him get reelected if he keeps acting like a pet rock.

Because Warren for all her bluster and publicity has done virtually nothing for MA. Both her and Markey have done less for MA than Kerry did which was already embarrassingly little compared to Kennedy and even Brown's brief record.

Our national delegation is a lot of hot air and pandering. Not so much on producing results for the commonwealth.

Markey authored the 21st Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act (H.R. 3101). This is like the ADA for d/Deaf and blind people. It's a BFD!

Baker won in 2014, by less than 2% against the hapless Martha Coakley. The difference was approximately 44,000 votes. How many of those 44,000 are part of the 1,000,000+ MA voters who came out for Trump in 2016 while Baker trashed him? Surely most if not all. Trump supporters will rember in November 2018.

I've never heard of Gonzales, but if the Dems can avoid nominating a far-left extremist, they'll walk away with it. Baker's only hope is that the Democrat party is so far gone that they will again nominate someone too crazy, unknown or unlikable for the few remaining Reagan Democrats and Independents to vote for. Baker's only guaranteed constituency is the establishment Republicans, worth only a few percentage points.

Baker would still be doing whatever he was doing before getting the corner office if not for independents and some disillusioned Democrats. That is what has been driving his relentless centrist approach. He will try to make the classic Republican case of fiscally sound governance and go from there.

I give you this. If somehow the Democrats can find a candidate that is an exact mirror image of Baker, they have a chance. If they go the route of 1994 and nominate someone who has no chance of winning, they will get a replay of 1994. Incumbency has it's privileges. I love to note the 16 years the Democrats were in the wilderness when it came to the Governor's Office, but that was also 2 incumbents running in the middle of those 4 races.

...in my drink. Only explanation for my defending Fishy's analysis....

I think Fishy's not far off. We currently do NOT have a Republican governor. He is in fact whatever the majority of Massachusetts Democrats actually are -- ersatz Republicans? I don;t know, but they sure as shit aren't actual Democrats. Like the Fishy one says, had the Democrats run someone with a y chromosome who was better talking sports and holding a lunchbox (and not a horrid campaigner on a par with another pantsuiter we could mention) Charlie might not have won. And this time around with the Herald and the Mark Fisher Vendetta types braying for Prince Charlie's balls on a toothpick, he'll have to make sure the Globe really brings out the trade unions for him. He'll probably have to come back to Roxbury and show off some dance moves, maybe go up to Lawrence and talk about how much he likes salsa on his eggs, that sort of pander...uh thing.

Gonzalez might be able to siphon away some of the business types, if he fits in with them better than Prince Charlie, but I have no clue if he does or doesn't. Just never underestimate the voting power or vindictiveness of angry white men from somewhere out by Worcester. I think that maxim has been proven pretty well in recent months.
