Keep your dog on a leash and keep a hold of that leash. Also, the bill for this rescue is $_______ - you'll get it in the mail and you have 30 days to pay it.

I'd be OK with billing him for the rescue, if we were to also bill for firefighter calls necessitated by careless smoking, and for highway rescue and EMT services provided to drivers who were breaking the speed limit.

By that logic, people not wearing seat belts should have to pay for the injuries that result from not wearing seat belts.

FYI the BFD never charges for any of their services. They consider it an honor and privilege. You'll get no bill.

I would feel awful if I put someone's life at risk by letting my dog go unleashed. Kudos to the fire dept but let's be sensible, folks.

Should've let the mutt sort itself out. Firefighters have more important things to do.

Or would you rather the first time they practice is for, say, a child?

They go in after them. Then more humans get involved and fall through. Then the FD has to respond to an even bigger clustermess involving a dog AND a bunch of people, all in need of rescue.

Let the FD make these decisions - there are reasons why they are willing to do these rescues.

Firefighters protect life and property, and a dog is, in the eyes of the law, valuable property,

Firefighters don't ask whether life or property is endangered as a result of stupidity, of deliberate misbehavior, of innocent mistake, or of act of God.... they just rescue.
