You'd figure the lady would take her foot off the gas as soon as she realizes she's going in the wrong direction.

So called "pedal error" is a huge problem with the elderly as is repeat drunk driving for all ages. The Democrat legislature was quick to mandate Interlock ignition breathalyzer devices for repeat drunk drivers. Although a good idea, of course it was tarnished by the Democrat legislators, defense attorneys and judges who control the company where the device has to be "leased, calibrated and installed," costing the drivers a small fortune.

Collision avoidance and automatic braking systems are readily available and could be mandated for elderly drivers to greatly reduce pedal error. With the elderly demographic a dependable Democrat voting block and AARP a strong-Democrat PAC, don't hold your breath, just invest in running shoes for sprinting in front of markets and malls.

For drunk drivers, five years loss of license after first offense. Lifetime loss after 2nd offense. No gimmicks.

For elderly, yearly on-road testing. Collision systems are helpful but no substitute for proving you have fast reaction times.

You don't have to be old to be impaired by ill health. Doctors clearance and simulator screening while your wait for your photo in order to renew.

in addition to their license. Requiring ALL drivers to carry one is not an unreasonable idea.

is suspension and/or revocation of a drivers' license, will not prevent them from getting behind the wheel.

...if one of those 'self-driving' cars could have prevented this from happening.

Is "make it harder for incompetent people to get and keep driver's licences" a plank in the GOP platform now? Because I'll listen, even if it doesn't quite outweigh the mountains of other shit it comes with.
