Councilors to consider violence in Boston at hearing in Roxbury

City Councilor Andrea Campbell's public-safety committee holds a hearing on the topic of "violence in Boston" Tuesday evening.

The session, requested by City Councilor Tito Jackson (Roxbury) starts at 6:30 p.m. at the Thelma Burns Building, 575 Warren St. in Roxbury.

The hearing was scheduled before Sunday's outbursts of gun violence in the area of Warren and Copeland streets, in which police say they had to tackle a man holding a gun after gunfire and a young boy was shot.

Where does this 'violence' come from?

GANGS

If elected officials are too spineless to name and face the problem directly nothing will change.

The city council is no better than the cowardly Ministry of Magic in the Harry Potter series. They seem to think if they don't speak the name of evil and blame everything else under the sun that it will go away. Hate to break it them but the real world Voldemorts don't give a fuck what cutesy excuses and euphemisms get used by the clown show to blamestorm away culpability of vicious crimes they just keep on killing.

if a politician held a new conference and said "gangs are the problem"... it would solve everything?

man, why don't they just do it then?!?!?!? its so easy to solve the problem!

No, it would help to start solving a problem by naming it and not playing semantic games. The current practice of labeling everything "violence" or trying to use medical terminology like "epidemic" is PR buzzword bullshit to avoid acknowledging the shortcomings of the city's current anti-gang programs.

It's like being broke because you ran up credit card debt on stupid shit and insisting that you have a "surplus spending problem" thanks to "high balance lenders".

Hearing starts at 6:30. What's the over/under of when Tito blames Walsh/Evans for the violence? 6:31?

Last night! Then the mother of the child calls Walsh a liar for saying the father was the intended target. WHEN the father who was just released from prison on, you guessed it, illegal gun charges has been combative with police and doctors ADMITTED he was the target.

But to Tito it everyone else fault. Cant blame this family, and if you do Tito will play his warn out race card.

Ya he'd be great as Mayor, NOT.

"Mayoral candidate Tito Jackson said it is “unacceptable” to blame the family and the community for not coming forward after a shooting injured a 6-year-old Roxbury boy, adding that Mayor Martin J. Walsh and the police need to come up with a comprehensive plan to deal with violence."

Pass stiff gun control laws then ignore them?

"Court records show the boy’s father has a lengthy criminal record, including pleading guilty to possession of a firearm without a license in 2003. That landed him in MCI-Cedar Junction in Walpole, records show. A knife assault added to that sentence, according to records.
In 2005, he was charged again with possession of a firearm without a license, but it was knocked down to a first offense, and he was sent to Walpole again, according to his court file.
He was also charged with numerous probation violations in 2010. In 2012, he was charged with carrying a gun without a license for a third time as an armed career criminal, and was given a maximum of 4 1⁄2 years in Walpole in January 2013 and a minimum of four years, his file reads."

the 6-year-old boy deserved to be shot because his dad has been in and out of prison? OK. That seems like a totally reasonable, not-at-all sociopathic outlook.

Where exactly was that sentence in the original post? The father, whether he's walking the straight and narrow now, clearly had some issues in the past, which it seems to have inspired someone to try and murder him. So if I understand you correctly, the Mayor and Police Chief are at fault?

Crime is down in the city according to the latest stats, crime is down on the MBTA according to the latest stats, crime is down in the Boston Public schools according to the latest stats, crime is down in the parks and beaches according to the latest stats from MSP, Crime is down on all college campuses according to the latest stats. If you add up all the stats from the hundreds of different agencies one would conclude that fuzzy math is really the reason crime is down in the city of Boston.

I'm honestly having trouble parsing your comment. In general, yes, violent crime is down significantly on the T, in public schools, in parks, etc. That is because the general level of violent crime has been in decline for two to three decades, especially in dense urban centers. That doesn't mean it's guaranteed to remain in decline, or that it's been eliminated. Occasionally we still get horrific reminders of those facts, like when a 5-year-old gets hit by a stray bullet. Then city counselors go to work to try to figure out how we can make things better.

The stray bullet that was meant for the man that the child was with. Not totally random.

Just your poor grasp of geographic analysis, fear, and failure of critical thinking.

Crime is massively down everywhere compared to the 80s and 90s. Stop cowering, start seeing for yourself.

and nothing changes. Sad.

Consider also the ratio of

A) the number of violent acts in which a civilian brandishing a gun was the lawful owner of that gun to

B) the number of violent acts involving gun-wielding civilians.

up

That isn't a ratio.

Sure it is. Say 5 civilians shot people and 1 of them had a gun license. That'd be a 1/5 ratio. The problem is, we've got zip for data on whether that licensed shooter count is 1 or 4 (in this post at least) so the question in moot.

U R Fuzzy on Math.

Please give an example of a ratio.
