Must be a confused tourist, because even Massholes aren't that stupid, right?

Nitwit driving the wrong way on Tremont Street

Stefanie was walking down Tremont Street downtown tonight when she noticed this possible nitwit (with Mass. plates) driving down the one-way street the wrong way.

Tremont used to be a two way street.
It should be two way again ... for bikes.

Bikes can just drop down a block to Washington St - which is free of cars through a decent stretch by the Common.

It is full of delivery trucks and pedestrians unconstrained by linear conventions.

People shouldn't bike through the Washington Street pedestrian zone. That is dangerous for both pedestrians and cyclists.

Tremont needs a serious road diet. There is absolutely no need for 4 lanes. There shouldn't be a highway sized street next to the common. There isn't nearly enough traffic to justify so many lanes so instead people speed down it ,illegally park or, as seen here, drive down the wrong way. They should take a lane away and widen sidewalks since there are way more pedestrians than drivers and the sidewalks are dangerously narrow in places like by the King's Chapel. The Freedom Trail is infinitely more important than a 4th driving lane.

The sidewalk along King's Chapel is probably one of the busiest in the city, and is barely three feet wide, it seems. Absolutely no need for a four-lane one-way through here, especially since people seem to floor it as they turn off State St. Let's add some breathing room to the sidewalks, and add a two-way cycletrack all the way from Boylston up to Govt. Ctr.

Why stop at Boylston? Extend it one more block to Stuart and you get a better connection to Columbus Ave and by extension the SW Corridor.

Take a way a lane of car traffic and provide a protected bike lane. The sidewalks are plenty wide on the Common side and are duplicated by parallel paths in the park so widening them isn't providing useful space so better to provide bike infrastructure.

I agree. I used to do a bike commute that involved Washington/Tremont, and Washington St is terrible to bike on because you seemingly always get stuck behind a delivery truck, and it was hard to make it through the crowds of people coming out of the T at Washington/Summer/Winter. Plus the brick pavers aren't exactly comfortable.

And Tremont St is a prime candidate for a road diet. It's only really 2 usable lanes anyway, because the right lane is usually blocked by SL buses, and the left lane (which is parking, despite being marked as a travel lane) is always full of double-parked cars.

Make it 2 lanes and give the remaining road space over to a cycle track and improved sidewalks.

It sounds like the right lane should be a bus lane, not taken away.

Could be beneficial, but not necessary. It's not that there's a line of buses, it's just that there are two bus stops along that stretch of Tremont, both of which see decent usage.

I would support a bus lane, but I think having actual bus bays and maybe consolidating those two stops would have the same benefit, while providing more space for non-motorized traffic.

There are official signs in the Downtown Crossing pedestrian zone giving directions for bicyclists. Evidently the city planners do see bicycles as an appropriate means of transport through that area.

(I used to bike through there on my way home from work, but it was no fun at all. Never hit anyone, but it never felt especially safe.)

Except motorists continually flout signage, ignore the bollards in front of Macy's, and ignore the "DO NOT ENTER" sign as Franklin St becomes Bromfield.

its amazing how many people actually drive the wrong way down a one way (ok, ive done this intentionally a few times in my day when its convenient) or just flat out in the wrong lane. sunday mornings are a good time to see drivers in the wrong lane.

I see it a lot late at night or early weekend mornings.

What bugs me is they drive really fast. And in that I live in Beacon Hill, a large number of residents use the road for walking. Having a car coming fast from an unexpected direction (say from behind you) is not cool.

Yeah I see this all the time. Both people blatantly going the wrong way on a one-way, and people driving on the wrong side of a two-way.

Never saw it before I moved to Boston though.

Why not? If it makes my life a little easier, and there's no chance in the world I'm going to get a ticket or ever face consequences for my actions, why should I bother following traffic laws?

I was driving up Rutland St in the South End a few weeks ago coming from Washington. Rutland changes direction of traffic when it meets Shawmut. Some guy in a Range Rover was at the stop sign across Shawmut. I waited for him to go...and he started across Shawmut...and honked at me! Then flashed his lights! and motioned like I was in his way. After attempting to tell him this was a one-way, he swerved around me and drove up Rutland the wrong way. Couldn't believe it.

At Tremont and Park, there is a no-left-turn sign, and a do-not-enter/one-way combo. But they're not very prominent. There should really be another dne/ow on the near-left corner. https://goo.gl/maps/yEisKHXBYPp

At Tremont and West, there's a no-left and a one-way, but it's easy for them to be blocked by a truck: https://goo.gl/maps/ULAVpVmmdV22

Guess what: there's a Federal standard for this, and these signs don't meet it. https://mutcd.fhwa.dot.gov/htm/2009/part2/fig2b_14_longdesc.htm
