Tito Jackson apologizes for a Lewandowski-like encounter with reporter

WGBH reports Jackson grabbed a reporter by the arm and pushed it aside when she asked a question about his past job selling pharmaceutical drugs. He says he was only pushing her microphone out of his face, but sent the station and the reporter apologies.

.
...you think it's easy linking Trump to Tito Jackson?

To be fair, I read that one as Lewinsky, too.

Easy. They are two egomaniacal clowns unfit for the office that they are in or trying to attain. They will say anything to get elected and treat members of the press with callous behavior when confronted with past behaviors they don't want you to know about

Yes, clearly Tito Jackson is a scientist, physician, epidemiologist, and psychic who totally foresaw the opioid crisis.

Crystal Ball Jackson has already forseen mass chaos and only he can keep UPS from killing all of the South End and environs.

That's some pretty neat letterhead WGBH has, if you click through to their story and see the letter of complaint they sent Tito.

That aside, I'm not sure why Tito reacted this way. He's a public official. He should be used to the microphones by now, and know to ask, rather than force reporters' microphones to be moved away from his face.

The Councilor failed to make more readily available the City Stenographer's Stenographic Record made in the Council Chamber during Public Meetings of Boston City Council. Not a good sign for Open Government of a potential Mayor.

With Captioning errors, the less accurate Council video Captions Transcript done offsite has been made available

His campaign ad has captions in English and Spanish, he's deaf-friendly, understands disability, and consistently advocates for seniors.

so he's a real prize, yet this reprehensible treatment of a reporter does not seem to bother his ardent progressive supporters. Did they not teach Tito in the Brookline Public Schools that everyone keeps their hands to themselves? His behavior is inexcusable and shows how unfit he is to be mayor or anything else.

First, State Rep. Carlos Henriquez and now Mayoral candidate City Councilor Tito Jackson involved with violence toward women? Wow. There must be some better candidates. New respect for WGBH GM Phil Redo for exposing this. Normally we'd expect channel 2 and PBS to diminish it. I hope the young female reporter presses charges. Regardless of his unwarranted criticism of Commissioner Evans, Boston Police should file the assault and battery (A&B) complaint against Councilor Jackson. Even if they don't, the reporter can file on her own for a hearing before a clerk magistrate. She should. Make Jackson appear under oath. If the complaint issues, Jackson will be arraigned.

You're surprised that WGBH and PBS acted as they did? You mean because they reacted the opposite way that Breitbart did w/ their reporter and the Lewandowski incident? Doesn't surprise me!

http://www.breitbart.com/news/reporter-resigns-says-breitbart-didnt-stan...

WGBH stood up for their reporter; Breitbart abandoned theirs to protect their reputation among Trump/Lewandowski supporters. Better have your eyes and ears checked, unless you are already going blind and deaf. WGBH radio and TV, and PBS and NPR have always had integrity in reporting facts.

I think Tito Jackson should wear a body camera so we can have real transparency regarding his actions from now on.

I assume that you are referencing a book by a Boston-born author that starts with the modern-day Silicon Valley equivalent of the Babson Boulders?

There was also video showing that nothing happened.

After all the pro-women marches etc, I expect to hear outcry against Jacksons behavior by some women's groups today.

To ask Tit O'Jackson.

"Given the severity of the opiod addiction crisis today, do you regret your past work as an opiod pusher?"

If he answers a simple "Yes" and moves on, what then?

I have little respect for Tito but this is hardly a smoking gun. There are plenty of other reasons not to vote for him.

You gain a modicum of respect for him.

Ain't gonna happen.

If he's going to start assaulting people who ask questions what does that say about how he will act when things get really stressful as mayor?

i think it is a glimpse. i was excited for tito but it turns out he is just another blowhard, townie life long boston resident.

Boston needs some new blood in our politics. someone from the outside or at least someone like John Connolly (who lost to Marty Walsh).

Man, you are making yuppies look bad.

Connolly is 3 generations political insider. He makes Walsh look like an outsider, even after 3 years in office.

up
Voting closed 0

maybe more of an insider but he is progressive and forward thinking.... so he gets a pass on that.

You mean the guy who ran as pro charter schools?

Oh, but you are young and professional, so you won't care about the schools until you move to the South Shore with your 4 year old.

up

and he was also pro public schools...so much that he was the only candidate to challenge the anti-student teachers union.

imagine if he was able to overhaul the teacher's union contract or even get rid of it?? the schools would be so good the yuppies would never leave!

now i know why you didn't want him.

anyway, i would never move to the new england burbs (no culture and boring). if i ever need to worry about schools i've heard good things about public schools this area and there is also private schools and charter schools.

And people wonder why Clinton lost the Rust Belt (and got hammered in West Virginia even in the primaries.)

Don't put too much stock in what SoBo yuppie has to say about progressives. Anyone who knows a modicum about Boston pols knows that Walsh got the progressive nod once it was down to him and Connolly. Walsh is still chasing the progressives to make sure he doesn't get to run to the left of, by guys like Tito.

who can see how the teachers unions have helped to stifle progress in the schools over many, many years. It's frustrating to want desperately to be "pro-union" when so much of their agenda seems to be to obstruct any kind of change and often accountability. I've heard the same thing from actual teachers but it's hard to fight when you're immediately labeled "anti-union." Btw, this isn't unrelated to the shitty tactics (not to mention funding) that Walsh used against Connolly--that was a pretty dirty job. As far as the schools go, Connolly was the first mayoral candidate I can remember who had skin in the game, i.e. young kids IN public schools. And Walsh wobbled all over the place on the charter question.

It must be great to justify one man grabbing a woman's arm when, in fact, he had no right to touch her, PERIOD.

So if it were a man?

She had grabbed HIS arm.....mind blown!

Would never happen, and that's kind of the whole point. Guys like this feel empowered to control women and deny them agency in ways that wouldn't even cross their minds about other men. Women learn to spot it very early out of self-preservation.

Who writes the news that's aired in the lobby of City Hall?

Yesterday when I passed by, the TV mentioned Tito jackson's past as a pharmaceutical rep (and linked it to the opioid crisis), and I wondered if Marty was trolling him.

His employment history is a non-story.

Not a Tito Jackson fan and I think the Mayor is doing a good job but it is pretty obvious what is going on here.

Tito has been pushed into a corner where either he has to admit that his job as a pharmacy rep was pretty much just a filler slot until he was able to find something else or he admits that he had a hand in increasing the amount of pain killing drugs floating around the streets of Boston. If he goes with the first option he then loses a chunk of his resume, especially the much needed manager and creative solutions portions. With the crisis the way it is right now and with it being central to his campaign that means he has to jettison all the aughts from his campaign which reduces his resume to less than a decade and all of that is now within the bubble of politics and government.

In what was surely just a cranky moment he pushed a microphone away from his face and then in a sign of defiance refused to apologize until someone told him it would be smart to. This gave the perfect opening to blow the pharmaceutical sales job out of proportion and widely report on it because it is now attached to a real story. If he had just answered the question or said no comment this would not be happening.

Honestly I do not think he would make a good mayor but with his political background I sure expected him to be a better politician. At the very least I expected him to advance his stature in this race so he could propel it into something else. Although if he keeps this up he may have to pull a Sam Yoon and evacuate himself from the city.

Tito's really good at amplifying issues that matter to large numbers of people in the city - which is useful to a certain extent on city council and probably enough to keep his constituents voting for him, but he's also had a really poor track record of initiative and follow-through - He's been known to piggy-back on things and take credit - which I'm sure endears him to the other councilors. I keep wondering who convinced Tito to run because he's a very weak candidate - seems like someone's trying to get him off city council. My worry is that he gets replaced by someone who has been bought by the charter school lobby.

Jackson isn't smart enough to defend himself. The myth that most of the people hooked on heroin got started with prescription painkillers is preposterous and very oversimplified. Some did, many others were simply looking for a high cheaper than beer.

Jackson has the bully pulpit to defend his prior employment, instead he assaults the female reporter. My surprise at WGBH taking a public stance stems from their well known history of promoting the far-left (Greater Boston, Beat the Press) and banning moderates (Juan Williams). Conservatives need not apply. I'm glad that President Trump has cut funding. Violence is never an option but it is fun to watch liberals assaulting (literally) fellow liberals.

Boston politics is interesting. The Globe torches Tito. The Globe and Boston Public Radio are accused of racism for the opioid story and subsequent reporting of Jackson's reaction and alleged assault of a female reporter. The Herald through Jaclyn Cashman performs CPR on Tito's campaign this morning.

Is a Globe endorsement of Trump next and a Herald puff piece on Liz Warren far behind......?

up

And besides, the Herald sees that their traditional customer base- working class urbanites- is, um, changing. Look at their coverage of BPS and unsolved murders, and you can see that they do want minorities to turn to them for news. The Globe, on the other hand, has a more educated base that decamped to the suburbs (or, if you follow their distribution, Florida) and is whiter.

But don't worry, come the election of 2022, the Globe will endorse the Democrat and the Herald will endorse the Republican for governor regardless of the candidates, assuming they are still both around.

Grove Hall and Joe Fitzgerald did know a black guy once so I suppose you're right.

up
Voting closed 0

Don't forget that if there is no Tito campaign that there is nothing major to report about the Mayoral race. As someone else mentioned this does not bother the Globe at all but the Herald would prefer multiple little stories that will keep their paper selling rather than one knock out punch. It also gives them an excuse to slap the Mayor around a little through Tito. It's the same reason why Fox news and other outlets treat Jill Stein so nicely until they no longer need her.

Plus if the Globe and WGBH are on one side, of course the Herald needs to run to the other side.

The Herald is read for sports and gossip. No race=no gossip. Plain and simple.
