Knitting up a storm for people who need to keep warm in Copley Square

Hats and scarves in Copley Square

Rachel Kohn reports volunteers left dozens of hand-knitted hats, scarves and gloves in Copley Square today for anybody who might need them.

They're the work of Chase the Chill Boston, a group of local stitchers who:

Work independently throughout the year and then come together to paint the town with yarn; yarn that has been crafted into hats, scarves, and mittens, draped on signs, poles and benches so that those in need can help themselves.

A lot of people don't want head lice from other people who tried on the cap before them.

Sorry if your sensibilities are offended by unwrapped merchandise, but I'd be willing to bet people an inch away from freezing to death and sleeping in some of the most disgusting circumstances (i.e. bathroom at Back Bay Station) are willing to take the gamble.

The sensibilities of some people we'd like to help.

Head lice is an actual problem, and I'm saying, if you want to help, you'll help more if you go to a little extra trouble, to address that problem.

Dispensing online snarky advice to homeless people trying to survive freezing temperatures... you're a class act.

Anon makes a good point. It's a nice gesture but it's a risk to use a random hat, you don't know who's head those hats were on.

Instead of admonishing the kind people who knitted hats, mittens and scarves for the homeless why don't you go out and buy the hats, mittens and scarves that you deem appropriate for the homeless and distribute them about the city. Oh right, you'd rather complain online about those who volunteer to help the less fortunate than actually do something to help the less fortunate... because you know, these human beings without homes might have lice and all.

You meant "food sealer" in your "I didn't do a god damn thing to help anyone but I'm going to tell you all about how what you did was wrong but could be remedied if you bought this special purpose appliance" advice, didn't you?

Well we all take our chances when we try on hats in stores. I think the good outweighs the bad in this case.

But I've never seen a hat in a sealed bag at any store. Somehow I still haven't gotten lice from buying any hat despite the uncountable number of people who probably tried on those hats before me.

I understand the concern....giving not only encourages healthy attitude but may bring a smile to the needy.....something that should be on the 2018 goal list....many people need to repeat each day 10 things that will help society be a positive life attraction,,,,
