What does bringing skin color into this matter?

So president Donald trump applies the law equally regardless of race. THIS IS NOT NEWS. This is fake news race-baiting.

that scumbag never showed any concern for the law when he was ripping people off with a fake university.

And I love how the conversation will now change because it's white people being targeted by Trump's brownshirts.

"And I love how the conversation will now change because it's white people being targeted by Trump's brownshirts."

From the comments here, and I'll go out on a limb and assume that some of the commenters are white, I'll say the conversation has not changed at all. The common link seems to be the attitude that he broke the law.

The law is being upheld in an impartial manner. Maybe the parents should have paid more attention to the immigration laws that they got their green cards under.

The brownshirts were the SA ("storm troopers"), i.e. political paramilitaries.

ICE are secret police, of which the proper analog would be Gestapo agents.

What do you call forcibly removing 12 million people fro a country? Ethnic cleansing.

ICE needs to be driven out of the state. We want no Gestapo here!

It's about the DACA.
See, here's the problem...the Schumer Shutdown isn't fiscal, it's about policy, so it's not fiscal. That's the part the Dems want to keep behind the curtain, which is making it so difficult for the Dems to explain the shutdown coherently.
It's about the DACA and nothing else.

Consider: http://dailycaller.com/2018/01/08/leaked-memo-drea...

"The Center For American Progress (CAP) Action Fund circulated a memo on Monday calling illegal immigrants brought here at a young age — so-called “Dreamers” — a “critical component of the Democratic Party’s future electoral success.”"
"“The fight to protect Dreamers is not only a moral imperative, it is also a critical component of the Democratic Party’s future electoral success,” reads Palmieri’s memo, obtained by The Daily Caller News Foundation."

"“If Democrats don’t try to do everything in their power to defend Dreamers, that will jeopardize Democrats’ electoral chances in 2018 and beyond,” reads the memo. “In short, the next few weeks will tell us a lot about the Democratic Party and its long-term electoral prospects.”"

Read the article, it's interesting. Oh, here's a shot of the actual memo: https://www.scribd.com/document/368752696/Memo-On-...

I like to get my news from actual news sources. Lil' Pee-Pee Tucker Carlson's right-wing propaganda rag doesn't count.

The Daily Caller directly quoted a memo from CAP. Do you think they made it up? If so, Is Palmieri threatening to sue?

hyper-partisan pseudo-journalism. I do appreciate seeing who likes to cite it, though, for how it reflects on their critical thinking skills.

up

...are just fine. They do cite the actual memo, you can deny it all you want, but that doesn't make it any less real.

Chuck Schumer caved and the 'resistance' on the part of the Dems just folded like a poorly worn and sized set of chinos.

Let's play a game. It's called 'I'm the President'.

I'll let every single DACA kid stay in the United States forever. Problem solved. After all, they're all 'productive' and stuff. It's the only home they've known.
All will be given resident alien status. They will be immune to deportation unless they screw up. But...
They cannot vote. Ever.
Deal?

Think Of The Children.

up

They cite the actual memo.
So, it's real news. Oh, it appears the CAP has lost the ability to get the word out without it being leaked.

This is so much fun. Next will come personal insults from the 'anon', first the intro, then the insult, then the CAPITALIZED random words, then the clever coup de grace.

up
Voting closed 0

deliberately distorts the point of the memo to maximize incitement of fear and bigotry.

Read from a non-hyperventilating perspective, it says, "We Dems have to show some spine in fighting for DACA, which is easily the most morally defensible and sensible reform to immigration in front of us. If we don't stand up for this slam-dunk, why should big parts of our base like Latino-ancestry citizens support us? Being chickenshit on this score would cost us politically."

(I suspect that Trump is essentially pro-DACA, but every time he mentions words like "bill of love", his creepy white-nationalist advisors yank him back from it. Is there any political operative more easily pictured in a Gestapo uniform than Stephen Miller?)

To read the Daily Caller and many other sources in the wingnut propaganda echo chamber, you'd think the meaning of the CAP memo was, "We must open up the floodgates to teeming swarms of illegal brown immigrants and enable their counterfeit voting. It's the only way to GIT WHITEY, HA HA HA HA!"

Tucker Carlson and his ilk, both on Fox News and in loaded diapers like the Daily Caller, are a travesty of responsible journalism.

with the President when it comes to government shutdowns. He's the leader: it's up to him to make a deal happen. If it doesn't happen, it's all on the President. At least that's what he said, over and over and over again, about the 2013 shutdown.

In 2018, President Deal-Maker couldn't get the deal done. Who's fault is it, now? Per Trump, it's Trump.

up
Voting closed 0

...done deal. As you say, he's the leader.
But, you must realize, as the President, he's the administrative branch. He can try, but the legislative branch presents bills for him to sign.
"If it doesn't happen, it's all on the President."
Nope. Categorically wrong. He's the President, not a Congressional leader. It ain't on him.
High school civics. Learn it again.

we shouldn't hold Trump to his own words? Half his campaign rhetoric (when it wasn't about Making America More "Norwegian" Again, wink wink) was about how he was the world's greatest deal-maker, how he would drain the swamp, cut through the bureaucracy, etc., etc.

And before he was President, he was insistent that it's the President's responsibility to make the deals necessary to avoid a shutdown.

For once, I'm 100% in agreement with Trump. He failed to make the deal: the shutdown is his fault.

up

No, the President is the Executive Branch. Where did you learn civics? Were you posting in forums about how wrong Trump was in 2013 when he said the buck stops with the President when there is a shutdown?

1) End career politicians

2) Stop voting Democrat.

Seriously, I have no sympathy for Democrat and Republican voters at this point. None.

up

the Schumer Shutdown isn't fiscal, it's about policy, so it's not fiscal.

There wasn't any "Schumer Shutdown". The Republicans came up with only 45 votes in favor of the continuing resolution, and when DEMOCRATIC Senator Claire McCaskill proposed fast-tracking a bill to guarantee military pay, REPUBLICAN majority leader Mitch "Yertle" McConnell shot it down. This is on you and your "Keep America White Again" pals, who thought they could blame the shutdown on the Democrats. Too bad your "Schumer Shutdown" hashtag lost that particular war, and Americans are blaming Republicans for the shutdown. Nice try...I take that back, it was a lame try, but that won't stop you from trying again, because lame moves are all your side's got.

"The Center For American Progress (CAP) Action Fund circulated a memo on Monday calling illegal immigrants brought here at a young age — so-called “Dreamers” — a “critical component of the Democratic Party’s future electoral success.”"

That's true, but Republican robots like you don't understand why. It's critical because it shows a willingness (or lack thereof) to stand on principle and align yourself with the will of the majority of the American people.

And you'll get the sense there was a feeling out there that the Irish here somehow wouldn't be targeted because they're, you know, white.

I wonder how those feelings were ever born.

Our president applies the law regardless of skin color... and regardless of what race-baiters want everyone to FEEL.

up
Voting closed 0

...I didn't get that feeling at all.

"And you'll get the sense there was a feeling out there that the Irish here somehow wouldn't be targeted because they're, you know, white."

From the NPR article, "It's really indiscriminate. ICE, in their aggressive tactics of detention, are going after the Irish as much as they're going after any other nationality," says Ronnie Millar, director of the Irish International Immigrant Center in Boston."
In other words, he's saying it's indiscriminate.

"Immigrants who overstay their visas are at a unique disadvantage compared to immigrants who illegally cross the border. When they apply for their visa, they waive their right to an immigration hearing if they end up staying after their visa expires."

So, don't stay after the visa expires. The kid had a decent case for getting a green card. If he played by the rules, he might have done just fine.

So it sounds like some folks in the NPR story may be making race-based judgements (and the whole basis for the story may be as well), but the policy of the Trump administration referenced in the story is not.

up

the policy of the Trump administration referenced in the story is not

We'll know that if we ever see the numbers and all the internal memos. Estimated as many as 50,000 undocumented Irish in America - how many deportations, and how does it compare to other countries of origin? What about resource allocation? I'd say it's very premature to assume that this is an even-handed policy, and in light of things Trump has said about other countries, it would be wise not to do so.

up

This is an issue that the community has been pushing the US government about for over a decade. Even the Irish government has been needling Presidents from Bush 43 to Obama to now Trump for help for their emigrants.

But like other stories of the undocumented, there is a little hiccup. Both his parents have green cards, but he was brought over when he was 12? If they left America 13 years ago, those documents would be moot. If somehow mum went home to give birth then headed back to the States and he was raised with his grannie until he was 12, that would have given the parents enough time to get citizenship and sponsor him to come over. Something's off with the backstory.

Fixing what is wrong with the immigration system in the US should not have any deference to Europe, Asia, Latin America, or any other place. It should be a fair system with rigorous defense of the borders.

A great read is the novel "How the Irish became white" The English treated the Irish like s**t and turned the Emerald Isle into a sh**hole forcing them to leave their native lands in coffin ships. They landed in Boston and were met with "No Irish Need Apply" and the "No nothing movement" which Trump is trying to revive.

up

Numerous examples of prejudice against the Irish and then one Disneylike plot twist where everyone "accepts" them. Not a good read. Sorry to counter your opinion.

This is now new. Before Trump was president, if an undocumented person was arrested they risked deportation. ICE is not driving around Boston rounding people up.
“They have no confidence that the color of their skin provides any protection for them," he says. Isn’t this how it should be?

up
Voting closed 0

Yes it is.
Trump is enforcing the laws as written on the books. For years, the enforcement was lax. Now it's being enforced. I don't think you can blame the administration for doing the job that it swore to do. I think you can blame the previous administration for being lax and failing to do its' legally required duties.

That's what a tin pot, small dicked imaginary dictator does when his crooked ass knows they're coming for him.

And as far as "clean", you know a lot of "Presidents" that had to pay 25 million to the people he swindled before he could be sworn in or guilty of the fact that he's a bad lay who gets to pay 130k for the privilege to be called one?

Republican lawmakers appear to be doing the bidding of Russian bots in calling to be made public an allegedly incendiary memo detailing secret FISA spying on the Trump campaign.

The #releasethememo campaign on Twitter has been heavily promoted by Kremlin-linked influence networks, according to transparency site Hamilton 68. At one point, bot activity for the hashtag soared by over 260,000%, according to reports.

The House Intelligence Committee memo reportedly details how the FISA surveillance law was used by the FBI under the Obama administration to spy on members of the Trump campaign team, who are suspected of collusion with Putin aides in the run up to the last presidential election.

Glad to see that you're so proud of being a pawn of Russian bots. Ever occur to your pea brain that the "memo" in question can be released by the small dicked moron that plays at being President or that the "memo" is coming from the deranged mind of Devin Nunes who was supposed to recuse himself from all this but has been so scared shitless about his part in all this, who cares, right?

I discovered this site around 2006-2007 in preparation of Trump's election, and have been blending in among the other message board participants, until my admission today.

It was irresponsible for them to have never gained legal citizenship. Laws, rules, even taboos exist for a good reason; they prevent anarchy and hopefully prevent us reverting to our previous savage behaviors.

Even in Indiana, a lot of white people who voted for Trump learned that the Mexican restaurant owner that they all liked was deported. He'd been here since he was a child. He ran a great restaurant that they all liked. They voted for Trump to get rid of the "bad hombres" and then lost their friend to ICE.

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/trump-immigration-crackdown-causes-some-to-...

It's a story playing out thousands of times across the country. Sure, assholes on this board who haven't lost a friend to ICE deportation who might have been brought here at the age of 3 won't get it. They'll take the easily stated "it's only Trump being fair" stance as they've already started crowing. But families are being destroyed, small businesses crushed, and all sorts of people are getting tossed out with the bath water.

This has shit-all with being "fair" and everything to do with being impersonal and crude. The "rule of law" enabled our President to humanely apply our laws because our laws don't move at the same speed as our society. Our President enacted a rule to how ICE behaved that said we could both get rid of criminals attempting to abuse our graciousness while not destroying those who make our society better by being here.

Our next President intentionally removed that rule AND charged ICE with throwing out anyone they could find to send out of the country to "prove" his bona fides on being "tough on crime" and impress the simpletons who see this as "just being fair". And lo and behold! The easiest ones to find and throw out to quickly act on this new policy of "cleaning up" were the ones not trying to hide, but even VOLUNTEERED the fact that they were brought here as children and have been trying to live as right as they can be in the only country they've ever known. They've been waiting for a way to raise their hand and take an oath to our country in exchange for citizenship here. And instead, we put them in handcuffs and throw them out with even less than they had when they came here...while their family stays, separated, torn apart.

So, calling that "fair" is bullshit. It's not "fair". Fair would be to enable them to have citizenship and fix our immigration laws so that the next generation of parents bringing their 3 year old here never has to face this same problem. Fair is how our previous President attempted to make the law work to protect us while also protecting others who are citizens in everything but name only until the law could reflect reality. That was fair. This is brutal politicking supported by people who have no idea (and no interest in learning) what the impact their cheerleading is having on our country.

up

In your example, why was the Mexican restaurant owner deported in the first place? Felony perhaps?

If you can't handle that simple action to figure out that he didn't commit a felony, then me explaining it to you here isn't going to be of any use to either of us either.

History has taught us that we should be very wary of formalist appeals and legalistic justifications for outcomes that are blatantly unfair. It will never cease to amaze me how people can invoke a peremptory "but it's the LAW" and "enforce the LAW" but not actually consider very real human outcomes and loss to our civic life. The executive in this case (as with much police power at all levels) has discretion here. What is your conscience really saying with respect to the DACA volunteers?! The barely concealed (or outright) glee manifested by some of those cheering on this new enforcement regime is both cruel and disheartening.
