Charlestown won't get 4,000-seat music theater after all - but, hey, might get 30-story buildings instead

The Charlestown Patriot-Bridge reports the developer of Hood Park off Rutherford Avenue has decided Charlestown's just not ready for a giant music hall - but that it is ready for buildings up to 330 feet tall, so it'll be modifying the plans it submitted to the BPDA in December.

That Hood park isn't exactly the gem of the Town, but 100-300 foot buildings have no place in that neighborhood.

Density in the city?! Not in my back yard!

Why?

It's an historic neighborhood where most of the buildings are 2-3 stories tall, with a few modest office buildings. Tall towers would stick out like sore thumbs.

Plus traffic is bad enough getting in/out of Charlestown, and the Orange line doesn't really serve it well.

The orange line is a short walk away. Cities have buildings that are much taller than two stories. Deal with that reality or move to rural Maine.

Next thing you know, they'll be complaining about airplane noise.

A short but terrifying walk.

The best parts of Boston have buildings that are 5 stories or less. Deal with that or move to downtown Dallas. https://goo.gl/maps/HoQEDZpPFzp

Unless you are terrified by the noise your body makes when you breathe or something.

The other side of Rutherford Avenue, sure, but this is an industrial area.

Even Paris has skyscrapers on its edges.

It did not exist until it was filled in, dear. And once it was filled in? Industrial uses - some of them very, very nasty.

Where do you live? How about we open a "historic" and "heritage" tannery or lead smelter where you live to do EPA research that proves that all those nasty chemicals never hurt anyone when poured all over the site?

That is the sort of "historic" we are talking about in that area.

Next time, look at street view before commenting.

It's right next to two subway stops, a highway, and a quasi highway (rutherford). Good spot for some density.

It's across 10 lanes of traffic from Charlestown, and backs up to the elevated highway. It's in an industrial area with No residences near it. You'll only be able to see it from Charlestown, just like you can see the buildings around North Station.

buildings in the area with an "average height" in the 330 range?

For context, the Statue of Liberty and Big Ben are also around 300 ft tall. Bunker Hill Monument is only 220 feet tall.

Perfect location for tall buildings. Next to the highway and rapid transit, while also set away from the historic lower density sections of Charlestown. It's currently an industrial wasteland here. Looking forward to this.

The music venue would have just brought in more traffic.

Instead of mid-rises at the Bunker Hill BHA sprawl, they should build here.

Did anyone do ANY traffic studies on this? What will go in these 30 story towers? Offices? Residences? Has anyone seen what the off-ramp from 93N looks like, even in the middle of the day, when it dumps you onto a jammed Washington St. waiting for relief from a stop light at Sullivan Sq.?
The music venue wasn't the best idea but at least the crowd it caters to would be using the facilities outside of rush hour times. Nothing going into a 30 story building is going to do anything but clog the roadways around Rutherford Ave. 10x worse than it already is.

Stop driving.

That's the ONLY way to reduce and prevent traffic in our area. People need to STOP DRIVING.
