Grand jury ups charges against Boston cop who allegedly caused a crash while drunk New Year's day

As a jury heard testimony against one Boston police officer charged with beating an Uber driver, a Suffolk County grand jury was releasing an indictment charging another cop with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon for a New Year's Day crash in which he was allegedly drunk.

Domenic Columbo, 39, had initially been charged only with operating under the influence causing serious bodily injury for a crash at Columbia Road and Ceylon Street in Dorchester on New Year's Day that sent the two occupants of the other vehicle to the hospital - one with serious injuries.

The grand jury added two charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon - his Ford F150 pickup - and negligent operation, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

According to the DA's office, Columbo was off duty and in his own pickup when he sped into a Honda Accord early on Jan. 1

A passenger in that car suffered a traumatic brain injury, the DA's office reports. A blood sample taken at the hospital where Columbo was brought for his own, less severe injuries showed a blood-alcohol content greater than the state legal limit - at least 0.11 - the DA's office says, adding the Accord's driver suffered only minor injuries and showed no signs of impairment.

Innocent, etc.

If the cops don't have the moral fortitude to police their own, at least the justice system can send him to where he belongs.

I'm really glad to see that somebody is waking up the the fact that a motor vehicle is a dangerous weapon.

If you read the articles, you’ll see BPD anti-Corruption testified yesterday against Doherty.

Isn't the legal limit 0.08? I haven't heard 0.11 anywhere before, but maybe it's changed?

Also, f this guy. Don't let him drive again.

"A blood sample taken at the hospital where Columbo was brought for his own, less severe injuries showed a blood-alcohol content greater than 0.11 - higher than the state legal limit, the DA's office says"

the legal limit is .08. What's the issue?

His blood showed at least 0.11 - but the DA's office said it was more than that (I'm guessing some fraction higher). I'll rewrite to make it clearer.

The officer who is charged with beating up the Uber driver is Michael Doherty. Columbo is the officer charged with the OUI crash. I linked to the Doherty story in case anybody want to read up on that case.
