Herald newsroom shrinks under new owners

Herald reporter Bob McGovern tallies the damage since a slash-and-burn owner took over at the Herald:

At one point the Herald encompassed two floors  -  now advertising and editorial are separated by a little more than 77 inches of carpet.

The Globe and the Herald could operate out of a Starbucks bathroom at the rate they are downsizing. Those working conditions might even improve the quality of their content.

...without professional journalism.

No "citizen journalism" will not replace it. Nor will blogs. Cable news is merely entertainment based on daily events.

We're volunteering to preemptively build the Ministry of Information for ourselves.

...without professional journalism.

Steady, now. We're talking about the Herald.

But first, the Herald does (or at least did before all of this) cover things the Globe, and all other media in Boston, didn't, such as their tenacity on the issue of unsolved homicides.

Second, the Herald keeps the Globe on its toes. Were the Globe to slack off, readers might start checking out the competition. Without that, the Globe could just coast on their reputation.

That said, it was a very depressing article. And yes, I have noticed that little things like box scores have been looking a bit off.

"Cable news is merely entertainment based on daily events."

Not just cable news. All local television news is now merely infotainment and very little else. Channels 4,5, 7, 10, and especially 25. It's all about lost dogs, sick kids, the various comings and goings of Marathon survivors and their rescuers...just infotainment.

And don't forget the round the clock wall to wall snowtainment whenever a few flakes of snow fall. Complete with multi-split screens and on the spot broadcasts from Plum Island, that magical Brigadoon of a place that only exists when it snows.

Indeed, it's basically weather and the "satellite desk". I've joked that Jon Keller gets more time on "Beat The Press" than he does on his own station, such has been the decline of local political reporting(Andy Hiller is long gone). Has channel 4 started previewing the 2019 Marathon yet?

What an odd expression.

"Hey Bob, whattya doing with that tape measure?"

"I'm writing a blog post, now mind your own business"

Now that's a thick carpet.

A not so subtle swipe at the moron who now runs the joke of an "editorial" page over at the home of racist numbskulls, the porcine racist and congenital idiot, Tom Shattuck?

Shattuck, a former hotel bellman and intern to Michael Graham and Jay Severin, seems to have only gotten his position by first trying to get a job at WEEI, then when that failed, most likely took whatever lowball offer to run what's left of that dying rag.

As for evidence, when McGovern made a gracious farewell on Twitter to his colleagues at what's left of the Herald, noticeably missing from the goodbyes on both sides was one from Shattuck.Shit, even Laurel Sweet took time from her pursuit of blood to chime in.

McGovern is a good guy and will fare much better than those he left behind.

McGovern writes: “Pick up the paper when the Celtics, Bruins, Sox or Patriots have a West Coast or Mountain Time evening game.” Early deadlines mean no score. In the Herald I get delivered, in Roslindale, not some far-off outpost, there’s frequently no score on home games that end before 11! Sports coverage has always been important to the Herald: they send reporters around the world, they occupy more than 1/3 of the shrinking news space. If they can’t cover the local games because of their ridiculous deadlines, that may put them out of business before they have a chance to fire everybody.

Just run buzzfeed trash, like the Globe does with boston.com.

And PR shill billion-dollar swindles, like the Globe does with Shirley Leung.

Once you hit the threshold, you can kick back, relax, maybe buy a sports team.

These days uou buy a sports team THEN you buy a newspaper.

Some of our meetings were shifted around to make sure Howie Carr could be accommodated.

So, it's going to be Howie, wire copy, and maybe some pictures of cute animals.

Wrong paper. The Globe still has a link to that nice story about the little doggie that was lost in Milton on its front page.

The Herald has always had flaws, some awful columnists like Michael Graham, but the Globe editors you would believe should respect their readers' intelligence more than they do.

In the comments above, I did not see the crux of the 'problem'.
Money ... finances ... 'resources' ... etc. (pick your terminology).
They're all essentially the same thing.
John Henry bailed out the Globe.
The Herald does not have a JH.
Editorial policy is irrelevant.
Actually, the new owners are heroes.
Hope they're successful.
