Woman gets leg jammed between Orange Line car and platform

And that was only part of the horror at Massachusetts Avenue station during rush hour:

That's awful, and the fact that she was worried about the cost is even worse. I hope she'll be OK.

I know we are supposed to "mind the gap" and all, but that can be tough at rush hour sardine time.

One more way that the T is unfriendly to humans.

I hope that she heals well and that these problems somehow get fixed soon.

That someone would forego medical attention because they have to fear the cost. Civilized nation my ass.

and by the way:

Civilized nation my ass.

Should read "Obamacare my ass."

before ObamaCare, right? The problem is greedy insurance companies who view health coverage as a means to extort profits from people, which is why they continually increase premiums, deductibles, and copays. And that problem existed LONG before Obama was president.

Speaking of problems, anyone else think this may not have happened if the MBTA hadn't been all stingy and removed the second person from these trains.

How would a second person have made a difference? Other than doubling the cost of running service, delaying maintenance/expansion even more, driving service levels down even more, and driving fares up.

The cost of running a train does not equal the hourly rate of paying the operator. There's a lot more that goes into it than that.

The biggest expense of running a train, especially an electric train, is by far the operator.

but.. but.. socialism!

It's frightening to think that one accident like this could bankrupt a lot of people.

If she had a HDHP and did ride an ambulance to the MGH ER, gotten stitches, X-rays, and a tetanus shot, then what would the bill be?

up
Voting closed 0

It's hard to tell since HDHP deductibles can vary, but it could easily be $4,000 or more. A simple biopsy will cost at least $1,000 at MGH, so an ambulance, ER visit, stitches, etc. will be much more.

The max out of pocket cost for a family HDHP this year is $13,300.

She needed medical attention not an ambulance to take her to the hospital.

that it can't be controlled with a couple of Band-Aids and gauze (as sounds like was the case here), the paramedics will stop the bleeding and then take you to the hospital in AN AMBULANCE.

"The gap" exists on most railway platforms throughout the world going back 100+ years. Accidents are so uncommon that it doesn't make sense to blame the MBTA for not trying to change it.

If gap-accidents happened week after week, then that would be different.

Saying "3rd world subway system" is kind of like saying "3rd world space program".

Merely having a subway system pretty much makes you not-3rd-world.

Another tweet from her said this happened at Mass Ave. staton, not State

The only way this could've happened is that the train was pulling in and she was being too fast or on her cellphone not paying attention and it caught her. I see people do stupid things on the platform just about everyday! People let there kids run up and down that yellow line all the time, you just have to put people on leashes now...unbelievable

What's unbelievable is that you find the time to scold the behavior of the victim of a horrific accident that you didn't witness. I see people (like you) write stupid things on this website just about everyday!

Tragic, thoughts & prayers to the victim, but how does this happen, the train is stopped, you figure she’s ridden the T a million times to know there’s a gap.

Lots of people pushing on and off. That's how.

That is how it happened.

If she can't afford it, she gets free care. Plus, Massachusetts makes it very easy for people to get on Medicaid Masshealth.

How the hell do you get your leg stuck in the gap? I've been riding subways since I was an infant with my mom and that's not easy to do. My personal observations are there are far too many distracted people, not paying enough attention to their surroundings, on the trains and out on the streets. One of my top pet peaves is the large number of people who automatically expect the other person to get out of their way, people who refuse to make room for people going in the opposite direction on crowded sidewalks, etc. We need big ass signs everywhere telling people to keep to the right on sidewalks and up and down stairs. It's ridiculous.

Although I'm not saying it has anything to do with this case, there are also far too many people on the T wearing flip flops, the single most impractical footwear known to mankind. Flip Flops are one of the few ways I can think of for somebody to get entangled in that gap.

She has to be from Boston calling shots under pressure. Tough girl bad situation. The T is the biggest scam in Boston's history in the making. Along wit the Commuter rail.

How exactly is this a scam on the part of the T?

Why does an Ambulance charge $3k.

Housemate had a similar circumstance up in NH, where it only cost like $2.5 and change.

If Paramedics are paid so cheaply, is it the equipment (or licensing on said equipment), that is so expensive?

I live across the street from a hospital taken over by a recently created Health Org, whose CEO seems to be the Head of Public Health for the city next door that'd like to annex us.

It'd be interesting to understand an awful lot of charges that seem to be billed to some sort of slush.
