Are you going to write a story about the cop that was murdered yesterday? Or nah.

How did you find out about the Weymouth shootings?

Obviously not from here. I didn't write anything because a) It's not in Boston and b) While I do write about non-Boston stuff all the time, I figured this particular tragic/horrible story would be everywhere and there was really nothing new I could add to it.

It is relevant! It a reminder we DON'T need a more progressive DA, we need one who will hold violent criminals accountable.

RIP LEO

Very sad.

It's great to see some enforcement in this area, at long last. I hope it's the start of some consistent policing on the library plaza and Copley Square itself. What should be a showcase for the city has become embarassingly squalid, all day, every day, and especially overnight.

These are the same kind of quality-of-life issues that once plagued Times Square in New York. We need the same kind of cleanup in Copley Square and Downtown Crossing, at the very least. Strangely, you don't see this crap (as much, at least) in Government Center. Wonder why.

These are the same kind of quality-of-life issues that once plagued Times Square in New York.

70s-ish Times Square and 2018 Copley Square seems like a pretty ill-informed comparison.

Or Downtown Crossing? Perhaps your opinion might be better informed if you did.

Tape is right. Your comparisons are massively over drawn here.

DTX is not even close to what the "combat zone" was like in the 80s. Not even close.

The comment was about the low-level quality-of-life crimes that take place every day and every night in plain sight. It's bad here and it needs to be addressed. It was bad in Times Square and it was addressed. No one said it's worse than the worst of Times Square. No one said it's worse than the height (or depth) of the Combat Zone-era. Why are you trying to make an argument out of it? I realize some people feel the need to make an argument out of everything, but this seem pretty obvious and undeniable to me.

You kind of inferred that by making the comparison.

I agree with the broken windows theory, but your comparisons did fall flat.

"These are the same kind of quality-of-life issues that once plagued Times Square in New York."

From that you derived that he said this? "[I]t's worse than the worst of Times Square."

He said these are the same kind of issues. He explicitly made a comparison of kind, not of degree.

He is equating things that happen in Copley Square with things that happened in Times Square, the implication being in the lowest point in Times Square’s history.

If Times Square in the 1980s faced the same kinds of issues Copley Square faces today, no one would be talking about how bad Times Square was.

Being as it's where I work, I'm in Downtown Crossing 5 days a week. And I'm in Copley often enough.

Granted, I never set foot in Times Square in the 60s, 70s, or 80s, but I did see the tail end of the Combat Zone era and even comparing DTX/Copley to that, a tiny fraction of the Times Square "heyday" (or even its own heyday), is extremely laughable.

complains that the anti-crime K car officer wasn't identifiable as a police officer due to not being in uniform but is screaming "Fucking Pig"

The area is posted regarding skateboarders.

I don't know, maybe a cop should have thicker skin if he can't handle a teenager calling him names from 30 feet away.

If a Dunks employee is expected to take that in his or her face without reacting, I think the far more considerable training a cop receives should cover that.

The police responded because of the law-breaking.

And not to get all "hey-you-kids-get-off-of-my-lawn" about it, but the level of disrespect for law enforcement is a huge issue in our society, particularly among younger generations. The wholesale slaughter of the largely black and brown victims of bad policing is obviously tragic, disgusting, and urgent, and a major cause of these attitudes. But both of these societal problems need to be addressed. And I'm not sure one could ever be fixed without the other.

...just maybe, a stupid little misdemeanor doesn't rise to the level of beating the shit out of teenagers because your little feelies got hurted and you were on a power trip.

The area around where the bus stop on the Boylston side of Copley is loaded with bad element. You just need to keep looking down and avoid eye contact. It's not a nice area.

...but you are exactly right. This has nothing to do with the race or the age of these people. It has almost everything to do with their addictions and homelessness, and the almost complete lack of police presence and enforcement.

up

But you do realize that it's not illegal to be homeless.

Nor is Copley some hellhole like you seem to be ascribing it. It's actually quite a nice area.

And it's been like that for decades. By and large those folk don't bother anybody else, but they sure do like to take turns liking and hating each other.

But just in case either of you are interested in the actual rules and regulations that are supposed to govern public parks:

If you were a Boston cop would you rather do a detail or respond to the Copley Library to deal with anarchist skateboarders with the following results. Your arrest gets laughed out of court and you become officer Krumke on youtube or world star.

If they're skating on the library steps fuck 'em. That's a Boston treasure. Teach em to stay away.

I don't get why people get so mad about the dang outdoor steps. It's not like they're grinding the map room.

In the grand staircase there. Just kidding.

IDK I just love that building including the stairs.
Go shred the fountain or some non-historic building.

To cross reference posts: respect Faneuil Hall proper. Go shred the fuck out of the rails in the marketplace and City Hall and it’s plaza too.
