Security beefed up at Globe's downtown headquarters after threats

Companies with offices at 53 State St., where the Globe is now headquartered, got a memo from building management today about unspecified threats called into the Globe:

Earlier today a tenant in the building, the Boston Globe, received several threats via phone call. Based on this threat the local and federal authorities have recommended some additional security measures for the property. For the remainder of the day you will see uniformed Boston Police officers in the lobby and around the property. There are very few specifics, but the threat was specific to later this afternoon.

The property is working closely with the authorities and we will advise all tenants of any updates or changes in this situation. The property is following all appropriate procedures and protocols.

The Globe today spearheaded an effort by American newspapers to fight back against Nazi- and Soviet-style attacks on the press by the president, who, of course, responded with a befuddled rant about free-speech collusion.

...and the lemmings are following.

One thing to remember in all this is the great group of people who work the desk at 53 State. They are a really great security crew who are most of the time upbeat and always are professional.

They are the ones who have to be on enforced OT today, possibly missing a family dinner or game because of the musings of the collection of frass in corporeal form at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue today.

The Herald seems to be taking issue with this concerted effort. Didn't their new owner do a similar thing a month or so ago in all of its own newspapers, nationwide?

up
Voting closed 0

The context being that back in 1972 the federal government, at the behest of Tip O'Neill working on behalf of a certain newspaper owned by the owner of a soccer team that employs Mo Saleh, basically put the old Herald out of business. The implication has always been that the newspaper then headquartered on Morrissey Blvd. wanted the right leaning newspaper silenced.

I saw the Globe's point with the overall tone of the campaign- we need a free press to keep government honest, but the first few lines of the editorial were a reminder of why Trump has a point in that the press is out to get him. In real authoritarian societies, many of the "opposition press" would be shut down by now. Instead, they are flourishing.

Bottom line, though, is that actual threats to any press, across the spectrum, is wrong, wrong, wrong.

A robust, free and independent press is vital to a free society. So, where do we stand today?
Charlotte, a week ago:http://www.eutimes.net/2018/08/nbc-ignores-own-rep...
https://www.newsweek.com/reporter-attacked-during-...

Not much in the local press about that. It was all 'peaceful anti-racist protesters' in our press. Newsweek, of all people, so it didn't get a lot of eyeballs.

The Globe and the three hundred other newspapers are trying to show that they are strong, independent voices that are NOT out to get Trump...by proving that they are united in, um, maintaining the resistance.
Right.

Really, this is not about Hillary. As much as you guys try to make it about her, it isn't. When you have nothing else to say, you bring up Hillary.

I was one of those whose skin crawled every time I heard her voice. I wanted nothing to do with her. I've said that the only good thing with Trump winning is that we would never hear from Hillary again.

But, that's over now. And now, it's all about Trump and all the bullshit he pulls. It has nothing to do with Hillary. Yes, we know she lost almost two years ago, but that's done and we've moved on. Apparently, you haven't.

Between Trump crying about fake news, appointing totally incompetent people as staff and for the cabinet, having no strategy at all with trade, totally denying science and climate change, acting like a child by calling people names, having absolutely no diplomatic ability at all, telling well over 3000 lies since taking office (see latest tweets), having no interest in learning about his job and how lawmaking works, being responsible for hundreds of kids being separated from their parents, putting the country deeper and deeper into debt, handing over all sorts of favors to his rich cronies, etc. etc. etc......this is well beyond losing an election. It's about someone doing a really bad job running the country.

Give me a f'ing break. If this were the Nazis and/or the Soviets, the PRESS WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN ALLOWED TO PRINT ANY OF THIS. You should talk to a holocaust survivor sometime - it didn't all just happen at once.

You might also benefit from reading It Can't Happen Here by Sinclair Lewis, who was alive at the time of the rise of Nazism.

You were not taught history properly, I see. It isn't a coherent list of events conveniently leaving out the prologue. Many excellent courses available at your community college if you really want a grown up level of detail.

Oh, hi dear.
Well, since you're such an expert in creeping fascism, what do you think of the large corporation's efforts to stop the display of wrongthink in the what is today mainstream media?
F'rinstance...Alex Jones & Infowars...banned by left leaning corporate decree. I don't think it's the government that's the problem here. I never followed it much, but to erase it from the mainstream platforms smacks of Stalinist airbrushing. There are many other conservative sites that are getting hit left and right, no explanation, some shadow-banned, some just blocked. Always seems to hit the right of center ones the most.
I know, I know, the First Amendment covers government powers. Right. So, when the corporations become more powerful than the government, who the hell covers them?

Maybe it's time to list Twitty, Faceplant, the Goggles and red you tube as common carriers with no interference in the content posted. That way, freedom of expression can be maintained on non-government media.

Democracy dies in darkness.

I worked overnights a few years back and would troll the infowars comment section (the people who commented needed to be challenged). The entire website had a strange leaning which was pro Russia, anti government and specifically anti police.

Once the black lives matter groups came on, the anti police stuff stopped 100%. But the pro Russia stuff was really weird and this was way before what we know now about the Russian hackers. I'm convinced the Russians had control over much of that website.

The Sandy Hook people I believe just made Jones money. I don't think Jones ever believed it was set up, but if he put up a platform for people to say it was, he made some money.

Also at night is a show on 680 with Art Bell and others who talk about aliens, ghosts, lizard people etc. On a much lower level they have the same concept. Let the people talk about these things and don't challange them. All about the $$$.

There's the basics like not letting CNN reporters even ask questions during the WH press briefing. There's purposeful obfuscation of facts and details. There was the attempt to end the WH press briefing outright. They're are the verbal attacks, that have led to physical attacks at some of his rallies. News organizations around the country have needed more security. Yes legally he has not, and cannot, silence the press, but he's doing everything else in his power to diminish and taint everything they stand for.

up

Didn't Obama kick Fox News and a few newspapers out of the WH press room for a few months?

up

Obama complained about Fox and he refused to go on its Sunday shows for awhile and tried to exclude its reporters from a pool covering him at some events.

up
Voting closed 0

When this did happen (attempt to exclude Fox), the rest of the press corp united behind them and protested FOR THE VERY SAME REASONS THE EDITORIALS WERE WRITTEN YESTERDAY. Only this time, Fox doesn't think they need to be bothered. This is very scary what they're trying to do - silence the weak and threaten the strong until only the compliant remain. I'm concerned that there will be lynchings at one of his brown shirt rallies. A free press is required for a democracy.

up

They were during Obama's administration and they are now. But when we say Fox News were talking about the commentators who pretend to be journalists.

up

Absolutely none of that is prohibiting the Free Press. Zero. Not letting CNN reporters ask questions? Really? Where is the "Freedom to ask questions at a press conference" provision? WH press briefings have not ended. What physical attacks at rallies? Have a link?

up
Voting closed 0

What physical attacks at rallies??? Are you kidding? A white supremacist Trump supporter drove a car into a crowd at the right wing rally in Charlottesville and killed a woman. Other Trump supporters were arrested and convicted for beating a black man with a metal pipe. This was all in one day. Trump called these violent criminals "very fine people". If you support Trump then you have aligned yourself with violent white supremacists.

up
Voting closed 0

He had some quotes that were probably not that politically correct and didn't help him in anyway, but by saying he called the murderer and thugs "very fine people" is the exact reason why Trump got elected in the first place. Because people like you want to place everyone into one category.

"You had some very bad people in that group, but you also had people that were very fine people, on both sides," Trump said.

There you go. The exact quote. Did you want to leave out the part about having some "very bad people in that group" on purpose? And then make up that Trump thought the "very fine People" were those who committed the crimes?

You made that up. That is where the fake news comes from. You.

Trump is a loser/clown on his own. He doesn't need people to make up things about him because it does more damage than good.

up

The very bad people were beating minorities and driving cars into large crowds. Who were the "very fine people"? Because 100% of that side were marching for racism and spouting Nazi slogans. This is like saying Hitler wasn't all bad because he was nice to his dog. Not all of them were killing innocent women... they were just supporting it and calling for it but still...

There is nothing in the 1st Amendment requiring people to answer questions from the press. However, if you allow questions to be fielded, you shouldn't deliberately ignore certain reporters just because you have a personal bias against, or a disagreement with, the organization they represent.

The Trump Administration's ongoing actions against the press, while seemingly minor to many when viewed on an individual basis, are tantamount to state-sponsored censorship when viewed as a whole.

up
Voting closed 0

What censorship? Every news outlet is allowed to write WHATEVER they want about the President and anyone in his administration.

The Press Sec takes more questions from media outlets that are friendly to the Admin. That's censorship? It's the same as the Obama/Bush Jr./Clinton/Bush Sr./Reagan admins. Do you honestly belive that if Hillary Clinton was elected, Fox news would be allowed to ask questions at EVERY press conference?

How is he being held accountable to the public that he is supposed to be working for? This is how corruption is hidden and spreads. This is how dictatorships start. How can you call yourself proud of the freedoms that Americans are supposed to enjoy and then support them being trampled? This is sickening.

I think you are missing the point. Let us remove the words "Nazi" and "Soviet" style attacks and replace them with fascist-style attacks. You can google the definition of fascist and/or fascism at your leisure.

The fact is Little Donny has repeatedly attacked (bullied is a better word) through his tweet stylings, the mainstream news outlets, newspapers, magazines, journalists, you name it, anything that is not FOX news, as "fake". While we do not have brown shirted thugs marching down our streets, his words are meant to stir up the lowest common element of his base, many who are indeed thugs without the shirts. It is not hard to understand that Little Donny's attacks on said media outlets is a direct attack at our Constitution as well as being totally ignorant of the role that the freedom of the press served in our country's history. I see nothing wrong with those outlets, and now an unanimous vote by our Senate, basically telling Trump to shut his pie hole.

I know the Boston Globe is going bankrupt after the fake Trump front page, claiming nuclear war (now peace) with North Korea, stock market crash (now record highs) and blacks back in slavery (now record high black employment and support for a Republican). I know they are "losing sleep" over Yawkey Way, now renamed after a slave owner, the Earl of Jersey. I know their fake Dorchester number is answered in Manila, Philippines. But let that go.

If this is a real threat, two questions. a) why publicize it? b) why not quietly call for a police detail like all other firms do when there is a threat? One officer in uniform with a gun at the door of whatever remains of the Globe for $200 a day would solve any problems.

Purely a publicity stunt by the Globe. Trump voters are very happy at this time so sounds like an another fake, inside job. Really shameless by the Globe, even if threats are true. Wasn't it just last month a Jewish kid in Sharon tearing down Jewish decorations and blaming anti-semites?

Thanks dmc for the kind words, so very rare here.

I once was detailed to a large corporate firm where a disgruntled, violent person was expected. Granted, not the exact same scenario as the Globe but I had no idea what to expect. I didn't even have a picture of him, this was before RMV posted pics on police computers.

When he arrived, I recognized his body language right away, told him he could fight me or the 2000 other officers standing by, on-duty statewide. Verbal judo. I heard his complaint against the company. He calmed right down and his grievance was easily resolved.

Funny that the Globe finds it OK to post a fake Trump front page (many, including me canceled via Dorchester number answered in Manila, Philippines) but gets upset when Trump calls them out. In police work, we would call this "altered mental status" on the part of the Globe. Nuts!

Where is AG Maura Healy? Is advertising a Dorchester number for customer service, answered in the Philippines, larceny by scheme/false pretenses? I've arrested folks on that charge for less.
