Another turnpike trooper charged in overtime investigation; pleads guilty

Kevin Sweeney, 40, of Braintree, was charged today with one count of embezzlement from an agency receiving federal funds and one count of wire fraud in the widening State Police overtime investigation and agreed to plead guilty, the US Attorney's office in Boston reports.

Sweeney, assigned to the increasingly infamous Troop E at the turnpike barracks in Weston, was paid $11,103 for hours for which he submitted time sheets but didn't actually work for two State Police programs aimed at reducing crashes on the turnpike through an increased trooper presence.

The feds were able to get in on the State Police action because one of the programs received $10,000 in federal money. Prosecutors gave as an example a time sheet Sweeney submitted for 7 to 11 p.m. on Dec. 14, 2016:

Sweeney allegedly wrote eight motor vehicle citations during the shift and submitted copies of those citations to MSP as evidence that he had worked. Yet, Sweeney’s cruiser radio was not turned on during the overtime shift, he did not run any driver histories during the shift, and Registry of Motor Vehicle records reflect that none of the motorists that Sweeney claims to have cited actually received a citation that day.

A sentencing date has yet to be set, the US Attorney's office reports.

This couldn't possibly be possible. This is Massachusetts, the bluest of the blue, with gays, lesbians, women, minorities in positions of power, not to mention a brilliant woman as managing editor of the largest paper in the region, with democratic control of the house, the senate and until Charlie, the big desk at the State House. We told everyone once we had an inclusive all democratic government things would be the best in the world.

There couldn't possibly be embezzlement, corruption, collusion, etc. in our government !!!! I refuse to believe anything could get by the tough scrutiny of our legislators that the Globe told you to vote for. They are so thorough and efficient they get their work done early this year and can take a 4 month vacation. We are the best! We tell everyone else how they should be!!! Can people in Oklahoma do what we do??? That's our job as the shining hub on the hill to show the other troglodytes in flyover region how to do things.

I don't believe it, Fake News.

Well, to be fair, Massachusetts is better than Oklahoma in every measurable way. We lead the nation in education and wages. Unfortunately there are criminal cops in every state. As a nation we need to stop the bootlicking #bluelivesmatter nonsense and actually hold the dirty cops accountable.

Oklahoma has been perennially near the very bottom of the barrel in funding public education -- for all my lifetime (at least).
