Should result in an upgrade to second degree murder.

You hit somebody and leave, you fully intend to kill them.

I would really like to know whether police investigate what causes people to hit and run. Is it because they lack insurance and fear the financial consequences? Because they are high/drunk and fear getting caught for that? Or is it just some basic panic issue? Understanding the motivation would perhaps help to take measures to address the cause.

"You have the right to remain silent. You don't have to take a breathalyzer and if you refuse then the jury will never hear about it. Now, do you want to give me an extremely incriminating statement about why you did a thing that it's our job to prove that you did?"

Usually, its panic or they have an outstanding warrant, perhaps. But I believe the majority of those that flee, do so due to panic.

In LA there is a big increase in hit and runs and there was some press suggesting it was people who worried about ICE. Don't know how big a problem that is in the Boston area.

Here is the flip side. Once they got the ability to get a license hit and run rates dropped.

Its because many drivers think they are above the law and that their time is more important than the lives on others. Combine a sickening level of entitlement and a 4000 pound killing machine on city streets and this is what you get.

This is reinforced by cops who don't enforce traffic laws and judges who give homicidal drivers a slap on the wrist and an RMV who will give a license to anyone who wants one.

But since for some people ignorance is bliss, here we are.

If its not lack enforcement of laws, entitled/agressive attitudes of motorists, ease of getting a license or a reluctance of prosecution, what is it in your mind thats causing this?

You've heard me rant about safe streets and road diets, sure, but this is a small side-street in Cambridge during a sunny day, this isn't some case of wide roads and low visibility combined with high speed traffic.

What more can we do streetwise to stop maniacs like this?

Since we both know a long thread is ahead of us.

Almost no drivers drive with the idea that it is okay to hit anything, let along injure or worse kill someone, despite what the likes of Kinopio and you think. But that wasn't the concept Kinopio was responding to. He was responding to the question as to why drivers hit people (or indeed other cars, I will concede is a much less serious thing) and drive away. If it truly was the case that no one, be it law enforcement, the criminal justice system, or the public as a whole, wants to punish drivers for hitting people, there would be no reason not to stop, since there would be no downside.

Now, in the real world, as opposed to the world you and Kinopio inhabit, hitting someone then driving off is pretty much an admission of guilt. There as specific punishments for hit and run. The question as to why people do it is a valid one. You and Kinopio contribute nothing to the conversation by turning the question into an anti-car rant.

Minimal consequences for fleeing the scene do not help it.

If people faced an immediate license suspension followed by a threat of years without being allowed to drive, they might be less inclined to "panic". (see LA example)

Panic is no excuse anyway.

You also really struggle to understand that actions have consequences, even if that person didn't intend to injure or kill someone that day. People drive here like some laws are optional and these are the results of it.

I'm sorry that you're a car apologist but you offer zero solutions to resolving the problems we have with dangerous driving, other than sticking with the status quo and splitting hairs with people advocating for safer streets. We want to reduce the deaths from automobiles, its pretty simple.

If you think thats anti-car I can't help you. For what its worth, not in it for the long thread, your head isn't coming up out of the sand anytime soon.

You might have missed the original comment, the one your friend Kinopio (who has yet to defend being a douche in this case) commented on, so to save you having to scroll up, here it is-

What causes people to do this?

If you can't grasp that there was a legitimate question raised, and cannot fathom that I have noted that actions have consequences, there's no helping you. As for moving the goalposts, again, look at the original comment and ask yourself if anything you have written ostensibly in reaction to it has had anything to do with it.

If I drive away I can sober up and/or plausibly explain that I didn't even know I hit anything (if I really hit the jackpot the state will put together a video showing that my truck was just too big and unwieldy to have any idea I sideswiped a bike just before I got on the Mass Pike). If I stay I might have to wait while they do paperwork and then I'll be late

When you hear the reason you’ll be even more disgusted. If that’s possible. I don’t think I can say if it isn’t reported in the news yet but they know who did it and why she did it.

She drove off to attend and interview. No interview is worth a life.

i hope they can find whoever is responsible for this. i still haven't heard anything about the person on the bicycle that cambridge police wanted to question last month regarding the death of richelle robinson.
