Imagine a large city with no shootings over an entire weekend

The New York Post reports that New York, a city more than eight times our size, didn't have a single shooting this past weekend.

According to Boston Police, we had four shootings between 10 a.m. Friday and 10 a.m. Monday, one of them fatal.

A city with omnipresent gentrification and heavy-handed police force that won’t tolerate and sort of gun-toting thuggery...

None of them happened at #hubweek, #soulcycle, or #DoDamage .

So, none of these shootings are in the top 10 at Boston.com which is what is really important in Boston.

Really sad about that hottie washed away on his honeymoon in Costa Rica. That's important news.

Adam, NYC is more than ten times our size because it has 8.5 million people we have about 685k. It also has been much safer than Boston for 20 years-and it’s not even close. Boston is 3x more murderous than NYC And higher in every single crime category for at least 15 years..

Good for NYC but Boston gangs and thuggery are a different beast and not comparable and that’s because no one cares what happens in certain Boston neighborhoods as long as only black and brown locals are affected it’s literally okay and not a problem as far as the city at large is concerned.

Shootings occur in Midtown Manhattan. How much press they get is another matter

New York City includes many previously-independent municipalities that are far less dense and more economically advantaged. It's over 300 square miles in size. By comparison, Boston stopped incorporating surrounding towns a long time ago and Boston proper is less than 50 square miles.

If you add everything inside 128, you get very nearly the same physical area, and much closer to the same population.

So, how do you think the stats would look when you average in not only Cambridge, Somerville, Revere etc, but also Newton, Waltham, Milton, Lexington, etc?

Or conversely, compare Boston to a four-mile radius circle centered on La Guardia?

The police do basically nothing now on non-fatal shootings.

Boston is a major city that goes the majority of weekends with no shootings. That’s a fact. Boston also has years with 38 homicides not even close to one a week. One bad weekend and everyone thinks it’s a war zone in fact Boston probably won’t have another homicide until November. The gun violence isn’t close to bad here. There are cities half Boston’s size that haven’t seen under 100 homicides in decades. Cities Boston’s size that get 200-350 a year. It’s not bad here

It’s bad here. It’s just not AS bad.

I’ve been a cop for almost 12 years and responded to my fair share of shootings, but you don’t ever get used to seeing a person shot and killed in a city street. And you don’t ever get used to the indifference shown by the rest of the city in the neighborhoods that don’t experience this. For example, the fact that you are celebrating that we “only” do 50-75 murders is highly troubling to me.

For doing the job, and for posting here.

I ask that you keep replying and posting, to help everyone (me included) to understand what's happening in other neighborhoods, and while we sleep. Especially if it's fact based and not just hyperbole.

I'm sure there is a very lot going on that we have little way to know

As someone from Chicago, I absolutely agree. We average 30-40 shooting victims every weekend. Boston is much more safe than most comparable major cities.

Boston for its size has average crime but it's so highly concentrated that certain neighborhoods ar every dangerous. There is literally 1 city our size that gets 200-350 murders a year as one commenter said. Baltimore. Seattle is our size and gets 20 homicides in a year. Dorchester alone gets 25. Its at 19 so far.

If you aren't raised in Boston or live in the minority areas for some time and you think Boston is safe you're just blinded by the city's segregation. The Boston cop is telling you its not bad and we've had 8 murders in 11 days and found two dead bodies aside from that. Boston people have to get off of their high horse and open their eyes. Saying 'Boston is safe' is almost like saying 'Boston isn't racist'. Its just not true from objective stats.

You cant compare Boston to South Side Chicago Baltimore and St. Louis and say its all good. that's why our homicide rate is as high as it is and that's why there are over 100 different gangs in Boston. Living east of Dot Ave North of the Mass Pike or West of Hyde Park Ave/Washington street gives you a very safe feeling of this city. Living inside of it give you a very dangerous feeling. Some people in Boston believe that because they pay inflated rents and live within a mile fo tech bros the whole city is enjoying prosperity and people just like talking about sensational violence and its 'not that bad' Let me give you a break down of events in my life from 2003-2017.

I left a friend home in Roxbury at 10pm in summer 2014 to walk 7/8 minutes back to my grandmas house (I was 20 staying the summer with her) He stopped me before I left and pulled a Brick, Police Baton and a Knife from a drawer in his living room and wouldn't let me leave without picking one to take. I chose the baton but he decided he didn't want to give it up and gave me the brick.

In 2013 I was on the 23 bus and there was a 23 bus in front of me on Warren street. The bus stops abruptly. A dude stumbles out the bus all bloody onto Warren Street and dies in front of the Dudley library. His guts were sliding out of his stomach and his assailant ran off into Warren Garden.

A coworker of mine at a school in Dorchester had a permanent bullet wound in her arm ad she went to Amherst College but lived in Dorchester so she couldn't always escape violence.

A classmate of mine at private school had a sister paralyzed from the waist down due to a bullet.

My best friends cousin Steven Odom was killed in 2007 when we were 13.

A Dominican friend of mine from school was robbed 3/4 times at Jackson Square because he lived at Bromley Heath.

A family friend of mine was shot in the back of the head in 2005 on Townsend Street and died next to my grandmother house. He was 17.

I was robbed for my candy often in between the ages of 7-9 in Hyde Park along Wood Ave.

My Half Brother's father was murdered in 2003.

We had moved out of Hyde Park and were renting the property by 2010. Kids order pizza to the address and murder the pizza man. The pizza man was a family friend of a friend of mine at Beaver Country Day School.

I got on a bus from Allston to Mattapan last summer r around midnight and a friend of mine got on the bus at Roxbury Crossing and told me some teenagers had tried to jump him at Ruggles.

But yea Boston is safe. That irritates me so much. I'm only 24 so I can imagine how much I will have witnessed by the time i am 44...

What cities other than Baltimore one of the most violent city's in THE WORLD?? like seriously where the hell are you talking about???

Using 2015 stats, these are the cities of halfish size (250k < n < 350K) but with twice or more the murder rate of Boston's (5.7/100k):

City            population   murder rate /100k
St. Louis MO    317,095      59.8
Pittsburgh PA   306,870      18.6
Stockton CA     304,890      16.1
Cincinnati OH   298,478      22.1
Newark NJ       279,110      33.3
Orlando FL      268,438      11.9
Jersey City NJ  265,159      10.2
Buffalo NY      258,096      15.9
Durham NC       257,911      13.2

Change it to 1.5x the rate and it doubles the list.

Or keep the 2X or more rate but include all US cities above 250k (that's 70+ more cities, btw) and the list is 30 cities long.

And if you look at smaller population cities (<250K), there are literally hundreds that are more dangerous.

For cities with 500k+ pop, Boston's murder rate is in the lower quarter.

To usefully compare the "Boston" crime rate with New York City's or Chicago's, we should add in all the surrounding urbanized cities and towns. At the very least, Cambridge, Somerville, Medford, Malden, Everett, Chelsea, Revere, Brookline, Quincy, and Milton, and probably a few more such as Arlington, Braintree, Waltham, and Lynn.

Boston boundaries aren't arbitrary. Towns abstained from being in Boston because they have different cultures ethnicities, laws, governments. Brookline opted not to be a part of Boston wayyy back in the day specifically because of immigrants crime and poverty. It's not like those places are the same as Boston other than being close to Boston.

Boston is not some midwestern city that can just annex culturally indistinct suburban or undeveloped areas. Trying to change the narrative is irresponsible and means your just chalking a certain number of dead bodies up as a given and unimportant. Dont provide an 'out' for the city.

That would make ot worse.

Boston made great strides under Menino to calm the city and move forward, but it feels like Marty has been taking his eye off the ball.

In fairness, the other part of the stat is that it is the first non-shooting weekend in NYC in at least 25 years

...other than that, yeah, considering the size of the populations, the rate rate here in Boston has been as high or a bit higher than NYC several times in the last few years.
