South End man has the perfect printer for somebody who hates himself

Now on offer on Craigslist: Piece of garbage HP color laser jet printer with off-brand ink cartridges. But the current owner repeats himself there.

Anyhoo, this is free to anyone who enjoys self-flagellation, being annoyed, someone into sadomasochism, my enemies, or someone who is handy and has the talent to fix things like this without too much effort.

Laser jet printers do not use ink. Ink jet printers use ink. Anyone who buys an inkjet printer in this century deserves the trouble.

Inkjets are still the cheaper option for those of us who only occasionally print....

Not to be that guy, but actually laser printers are way cheaper for peopl that only print occasionally. Ink jet cartridges dry out or expire. Laser printer cartridges don’t. And are often cheaper on a per page basis even before factoring that in.

Ink jets only have 2 benefits:
1: cheaper up front cost though.
2: can print I color

Color laser printers have only dropped to reasonable prices fairly recently, which negates the second point.

Laser printers spew large amounts of ozone, VOCs, and airbourne ultra-fine (and now nano) particles, including carbon black, which is a known carcinogen.

Unfortunately, studies about long-term effects of these pollutants have been mixed. Also, there haven't been a whole lot of them, too many are sponsored by industry, and the results are often depreciated by the rapid development of new toner chemistries being introduced to the market.

Personally, I use our laser printers only when I need to take advantage of their higher resolution or output rate. When not in use, they're turned off completely (as opposed to my inkjets, which I often leave in standby).

I've had plenty of dud inkjets in the past, but have found that careful choice of model and use of quality inks (not just going with cheapest sh*t I can find online) makes a huge difference.

(Fwiw, I workled for Panasonic for years, and loved their better printers, but they don't really make inkjets for the North American consumer market anymore - these days I have a Canon MX870 that has been a reliable workhorse for nearly a decade).

Interesting -- I hadn't heard about the laser printer pollution issue before.

https://www.webmd.com/lung/news/20070801/laser-printers-emit-indoor-poll... says a study found wide differences between printers. And even the same model of printer can emit a lot of particles or none, maybe depending on its age and condition.

I gave up on inkjets long ago because they're so unreliable. It would be nice if someone could recommend a brand of laser printer that reliably didn't pollute.

Ink jets will cost you more. They eventually dry out.

I bought a toner cartridge for my laser printer 6 years ago and I still using it. It was 22 dollars so dont talk to me about ink jet being cheaper.

Looks like the poster found the error and has since corrected it. Sometimes consumers can be tempted by cheap printer/scanners, especially when stopping by a Staples on the outskirts of Manchester, NH one evening sometime around 2010 or 11 (when home laser printers were far more expensive than they are today) while on the way down from their brother's house in Hillsborough, only to be met with years of printing and scanning frustration. I'm not saying that that's the case here, but yeah, those laser printers are far superior. I just got one.

On another matter: HP products are junk from the moment you plug them in. My work computer is HP and it needs to be restarted several times per day because all of the applications freeze up or slow down. When it was new, it wouldn't start sometimes, so I would have to reach around, unplug it, plug it back in, and then try to start it. That usually did the trick.

Agree that HP printers are a load of junk. I had two of them die on me when they weren't even that old. What's worse is they don't seem like they are dying at first, it always looks like something that can be fixed. This leads to hours of frustration on the phone with their tech support in India and the Philippines for things that are basically unfixable.

When you are talking about printers. One man's garbage is another man's garbage.

Every time I hope to print
Nothing happens when I click
Just a sheet I say to myself
Something to pile on the shelf
Why is printing such a bitch?

I imagine it wants you to load a letter size piece of paper, aka 8.5 x 11

Having been frustrated by HP and Epson over the years. I bought a Brother MFC series and the ink doesn't dry up in the head like the other brands if you only print once a week. So I've been happy, even using the off brand cartridges, the base technology works.

We had one, and unlike the HP printer we had, it lasted several years. And then it died because some reservoir that collects excess ink or something filled up and the only way to fix it would be to bring it into a repair center for work that would cost almost as much as a new printer (this may be an issue with all ink jet printers, don't know, but this printer lasted us quite a long time).
