Shooting, car crash near Jackson Square T stop

Jackson Square car crash

The crashed cars. Photo by Matt E.

Somebody was shot seriously enough at 265 Centre St., next to the Jackson Square Orange Line stop to have the homicide unit called in around 3:30 p.m. Police are also investigating a car crash at Centre Street and Columbus Avenue apparently related to the shooting.

WBZ reports the victim was a teen girl and that that shooting may have been gang related.

Orange Line trains are continuing to run, but buses that normally stop at Jackson Square are bypassing the station. Police have shut Columbus Avenue at Heath Street.

When I walked through Hyde Square around 3:30, they were also not allowing cars into Hyde Square coming toward Jackson Sq. A police officer was making cars turn left into the Whole Foods lot.

There is a police detail nearly all the time. Why do folks keeping doing this?

Brigham Circle and Heath Street due to this.

That seems ... unlikely. That's not close to Jackson Sq - suspensions on that part of the line are typical.

We live in Fort Hill and our daycare is a 5 minute walk from Jackson Square. My wife called just now to tell me she's been in traffic for 45 minutes trying to get from Latin School to the daycare. While we were on the phone she just made it across Columbus at Cedar. I can easily see this gridlock extending all the way down South Huntington and Huntington and trapping the trolleys. Everything is dark red on the Google traffic map.

Edit: here's the official tweet confirming these road closures are what stopped the train: https://twitter.com/MBTA/status/1062455229457883143?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw

Due to a police action at Jackson Square. The info board at Boylston was even more specific, stating Due to traffic from Boston Police activity at Jackson Square.

Was skeptical myself until I read Roman's post.

Crazy ...

Sad that most of these comments are about commuting delays - sorry but someone was seriously wounded by a criminal with an illegal firearm. News states victim is a teenage girl - I hope she is OK. And Commissioner Gross just called for the witnesses/public to step up and cooperate. I wonder how long until he is bashed for attacking the witnesses and victimizing them as critics did with Evans. Good job Gross - people do need to step up. Prayers for the victim.

Your prayers help no one and someone pointing out T delays does help people.

Are really not helpful. Thanks for playing though.

enough sympathy. How do all these guns get here? What do we have to do to stop New Hampshire and other states from selling people guns that are brought to our cities?

up

Don't you mean how do we stop Boston gangbangers from going out of state to buy or steal guns?

If you know how its being done than you should be helping not snarking.

Which is how guns are shipped north from Georgia.

Or perhaps they could find some who has a car and ask for a ride. Perhaps their friend is going to New Hampshire to buy fireworks and wouldn't mind the extra stop at the gun shop.

Or maybe they could rent a car, or get someone else to rent a car for them.

Or they could buy a gun illegally from someone who bought them in New Hampshire, Georgia, or somewhere else or just stole the guns from someone. I've heard that this option is popular, particularly with the underaged crowd.

25 to rent a car, and you need credit card that isn't too hot. The strategies that you are suggesting seem convoluted. someone is bringing the guns here.

From someone who owns a car, is old enough to rent a car, rides lots of buses, or breaks into houses.

You did see that I offered 3 other possibilities, right?

I am not asking for possibilities, I am asking for real answers.

4 of them. You critiqued 1 of them. I deferred (though you are not necessarily right, but I’m choosing my battles). Now you have 3 possibilities.

If you want the answer to how to deal with people leaving Massachusetts, buying guns, then coming back and either selling them or using them, I got nothing. But you did seem to have an issue with the idea that people somehow go to New Hampshire to buy guns, keying in on the transportation aspects, so I chimed in.

the point is that sympathy isn't making anything better.

Who are you kidding, Jamaica Plain is a shit hole and it needs all the prayers it can get.

Thank you for this post. I agree completely. I live a few blocks away and I am horrified by the violence we have become so accustomed to. Let's focus on the actual lives that are lost or harmed- all of them- not only to the inconvenience to some people's schedules.

It's a HUGE inconvenience for thousands of people when this happens. There's no need to block off streets, etc.

Yeah, the delays sucked, but part of the crime scene involved a crash right in the middle of a major intersection. Could you explain how you would investigate that without shutting that intersection to traffic?

It's all gone from our roadways in the past 50 years so now minor crashes or larger events bring catastrophic impacts. More capacity is desperately needed, not road diets.

Oh, and FYI, bicycling and public transit use are down in major cities in the past year or three, including Boston and even San Francisco! Thank Uber and Lyft for that and much local traffic and double parking which constricts roads narrowed by "traffic calming" theories.

Not all their fault. Blame record unemployment and job creation too.

You think there was once a spare Columbus Avenue in the area?

Of course, if they built the Southwest Expressway.... that traffic jam still would have happened.

up

Or do you have a 6' diameter pipe leading to your shower head to increase capacity?

Like to see where you got your information on cycling and transit use, too.

Or shall we just call you Markkk?

He didn't like bicyclists, to put it mildly.

He also had an obsession with the need for "space capacity" for the street system. That said, at least he kept it to the highways, not the surface roads.

Needs police coverage. Why is the police substation at Roxbury Crossing closed?
