Now White Fuel was a true Boston Icon -- if not an official Landmark

Hopefully the sign still exits in someones warehouse -- that would be a fabulous one to resurrect

[When I first got to Austin for grad school -- that's what I though all of Texas looked like]

There are a number of other old Boston and Cambridge Neon Signs that hopefully still exist at least as images:

  1. on top of small buildings on Vassar St in Cambridge -- visible from a lot of MIT dorm rooms
    1. Cains Mayonnaise/Potato Chips -- regularly hacked in the bad old days Mayo...../Pot.....
    2. Heinz 57
  2. Off the Turnpike ramp Alston/Brighton
    1. Coca Cola

Anyone want to add to the list?

White Rock Soda. That was a beautiful sign.

It's a shame the nymph and the rock fell off.

There are still several steps between the vote of the Commission and it becoming an officially designated Landmark

After the Commission voted to designate the sign as a landmark, Smiledge discussed the next steps in the process. She said that starting Wednesday, staff will begin to notify the property owners and other agencies who are typically notified. Staff will then create a “vote of designation” document that presents details about the property, a list of how the commissioners voted on the designation, and the date of the vote, Smiledge said.

This document then goes to the city clerk, who “shepherds it through the 45 day mayoral and city council approval process,” Smiledge said. Mayor Walsh will have 15 days to transmit his approval or disapproval, and then the city council will have the remaining 30 days to overturn the decision with a 2/3 vote.

I suspect that there can be considerable wheelin & a dealin in the steps outlined above

which have far more historical significance than a commercial advertising sign, which isn't even the ORIGINAL sign installed in the 1960s, are apparently ineligible for the same landmark status.

This is NOT what historical preservation is supposed to be about people.

I like the Citgo sign but is this just a "certificate of award" or some type of legal protection of the sign? The article isn't very clear on what "landmark" means.

Once it becomes official -- see tedpk's comment above -- Boston City Landmark status for a structure means that its owner is required to get approval from the Boston Landmarks Commission before making any changes to the structure that would be visible from any public way, street, avenue, park, etc., within the city limits. That would include, of course, demolition as well as lesser alterations, I believe even including paint color. Except in very special cases, landmark status does not apply to the interior, only to exterior elements that are visible from the street or another public space. (An exterior alteration that's visible only from a neighbor's back yard would not be included.)

I'm curious what happens if/when Citgo stops paying rent to keep their billboard up?

Too bad we'd rather keep an ad for a Venezuelan state-owned oil company because it feels good than take a measured approach to building much needed housing.

This city has lost its collective mind. May the NIMBYs be gentrified out soon!

When ten years ago, Chavez, still alive and flush with cash, hired whatsisname Kennedy to shill for Citgo and give out free heating oil "from the people of Venezuela"

Boston loves Kennedy. Kennedy loves Venezuela. Therefore Boston likes Venezuela.

I think Rep. Joe Kennedy II (the father, not the current kid in Congress) and the second wife were making nearly a million dollars each at the "non-profit." That money would have heated a lot of homes. Meanwhile, Venezuleans are forced to eat zoo animals for meat.

This was after he almost blew up one of his kids in an attempt at an illegal fireworks display down the Cape not to mention the woman who was paralyzed when he rolled over the SUV.

The oil must have "dried up" after Hugo Chavez died because the dutiful media would annually have Kennedy on TV driving a local oil truck pulling the hose and feeding the "needy" homes every year around this time. I haven't seen that in the past few years.
