It's not as if we all haven't known since the September primaries that come Jan. 2, Althea Garrison would replace Ayanna Pressley on the City Council.
And yet, as one roving UHub photographer discovered today, it seemed like a huge surprise at City Hall. He reports Garrison, her new chief of staff and some friends made their way up to the fifth floor at 12:30 p.m. - as somebody at City Hall told them to - only:
When she got there she was told her swearing in was put off a week, her office was locked and was not ready for her and still had Ayanna Pressley's name on it.
At least Councilor Ed Flynn (South Boston, South End, Chinatown, Downtown), who happened to be there, welcomed her and offered her any help she needed.
Like the job UHub is doing? Consider a contribution. Thanks!

Who told them, Adam? Sources?

You made a statement that someone at (City Hall) told them to show up, and following that put a paragraph in quoted format as though you were passing along information from a source.
Did you hear these things from an actual employee at City Hall, or from Althea/her people? There seems a lot of angst here for something that seems more likely a scheduling snafu.

Also, I'm a bit confused by the commenters who are assuming this is an anti-trans-thing, especially given the current makeup of the Council and other parts of City Hall. Y'all do realize that Althea's an anti-abortion, anti-same-sex-marriage Republican/Independent, right? Possibly among the most conservative members now on the council, wrt gender issues.

Yes, I think any reasonable person would assume that she had fucked this up herself. She is a nut.
Bad organization of Council Staff regard most folks as nuts!

Organization of a City Council is such that all can be welcomed with their concerns. Many of the 90 or so Staff of Boston City Council regard most folks as nuts. That unwelcoming practice can be changed. Get new Central Council Staff more familiar with up to date practices, technologies, software.

I very much dislike her bigoted views, but I also am committed to speaking out against disrespect of any and all LGBTQ folks, women, and people of color.

Where is the invite that both Councilor Garrison and the front desk were working off of?
Just because she tweeted something doesn't mean that earlier messaging didn't exist.

One may wonder if Garrison knowingly showed up on the wrong day knowing it could create a scene.

How to follow the workings of Boston City Council...
a) Ask Office of Council President https://www.boston.gov/departments/city-council/an... for the public funded Stenographic Record of Public Meetings, a more accurate Document for hard of hearing folks, for all folks, better than flawed inaccurate video captions. More complete than Minutes. Eventually the Steno Record will be online when more up to date Stenographic Services technology/software are used.
b) Ask Office of Council President for Sorted-By-Topic 2018 Roll Call Votes taken in Public Meetings.
c) For upcoming Redistricting ask Office of Council President for a Map more clearly delineating Names of Bordering Streets between adjacent neighboring Districts for folks nearby Bordering Streets, for all folks.
d) Flawed inaccurate attempt to decode the .sgstn on site Stenographic Record of a Public Meeting of Boston City Council compared with flawed inaccurate prepared off site video captions for hard of hearing folks, for all folks http://anopenbostoncitycouncil.blogspot.com
e) List of 89 Staff at Boston City Council http://anopenbostoncitycouncil.blogspot.com/search...
f) Advocate updating Rule 34 of Boston City Council to include City Council Data/Documents https://www.boston.gov/departments/city-council/ci...
"Rule 34
...
"...from the time the council staff shall have electronically transmitted the notices and invitation letters or dispatched them by special messenger..."

"Rule34
...
"Electronic notice shall be delivered to each councilor and other interested parties by council staff..."
g) Advocate Boston City Archives https://www.boston.gov/departments/archives-and-re... archive the Stenographic Record of Public Meetings a more accurate Document better than flawed inaccurate video captions archived currently. More complete than Minutes. During the years of Busing Debates the Steno Record of Council Public Meetings were archived at Special Collections at Boston Public Library.

She might have told somebody. I don't think she did, which is why nobody else was there except for her staff and friends and the person who took the photo.
