Police: New Year's shooter captured, may be linked to second shooting

MendezBoston Police report arresting Mario Mendez, wanted for shooting a man outside Revolution on High Street early on New Year's Day.

The Boston Police Fugitive Unit busted into 100 Stockton St. in Chelsea around 2:30 p.m., where, police say, he went after fleeing and then returning to Massachusetts. In addition to Mendez, police say they found a gun and narcotics. Police add:

Detectives are also investigating the suspect's possible connection to another shooting in the downtown area.

For now, however, Mendez faces charges of assault with intent to murder and assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon, because, police say, he got angry at a guy who bumped into him.

Channel 4 reports: Gunman Wanted In YouTube Shooting Captured - which makes it sound like he shot somebody at YouTube, when what happened was Boston Police posted some surveillance video of him blasting away outside Revolution on YouTube.

Looks tiredMendez, a Hyde Park resident, pleaded innocent today in Boston Municipal Court; was ordered held in lieu of $250,000 cash bail, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney's office, which laid out the basics of its case against him:

[Assistant DA Paul] Treseler told the court that Mendez and some associates went to a High Street bar on the evening of Jan. 1 and became engaged in a confrontation with a 29-year-old man and his friends. The confrontation became physical.

"The defendant and his associates were escorted out," Treseler said. "The victim and his friends were escorted out the back door."

Soon after, the two groups encountered one another near the club's entrance and Mendez fired "at least four if not five shots" before leaving the scene in a dark Cadillac Escalade, Treseler said.

The victim sustained a gunshot wound that was not life-threatening. He was treated for that injury at Massachusetts General Hospital.

A search this morning of the Chelsea apartment where police found him yielded three loaded firearms, 99 vials of steroids, 950 Ecstasy pills, quantities of cocaine and OxyContin, a scale, plastic baggies and $20,000 in cash, the DA's office says.

He is already facing eight years in federal prison on an unrelated charge.
