East Boston now New England's largest parking lot

A crash inside the Sumner Tunnel this morning caused backups past Day Square, while computer glitches have caused delays at Logan.

Christine Kelley reports it took her 90 minutes just to get to the tunnel entrance. EastieStrong reports her kids got to school an hour late. Cybah, who normally takes a bus from Chelsea through East Boston to his work downtown, reports:

Wow most of East Boston is a nonmoving parking lot. I had to finally get off the bus and just walk to Maverick because we sat there for over 30 minutes in length less than a 10th of a mile

Reason why there is traffic in East Boston every morning , it’s because everyone and their dog has a driveway in Winthrop and Revere all have cars and they use these cars to travel to work they use and exploit Eastie streets to reach the Tunnel into Boston, These fucking lazy north shore people then park their cars in garages in Boston . They should rather take public transportation, but they don’t because public transportation is for low income people plus it’s dirty.

You'd get along, lots in common, calling drivers lazy, etc.

There should be more needs of public transportation from these two communities Revere and Winthrop , I hardly see buses in Winthrop, how many residents of Winthrop use the blue line at orient heights station? Everyone in East Boston knows that at least 40 % of the cars sitting in traffic comes from either Revere or Winthrop.
This cannot continue, something needs to be done.

OK good to know it was an accident. I was thinking all the people who would have taken the Tobin took the tunnel today.

I got on the bus at 6:45, and I finally gave up riding after we sat on Meridian Street until 7:20ish. I just gave up and walked to maverick. There was *SEVEN* buses all waiting to get to Central Square (on Meridian). Stuff just was not moving.

And it was everywhere. I saw Meridian Street backed up coming from Maverick too.

Arg not sure I wanna go this way again.. already having issues getting to work in a timely manner (I'm never late just takes f'ing forever some days)

Obviously today is an outlier because of the accident, but I wonder if a (well-enforced) peak-hour bus lane would help on Meridian. I'm not familiar enough with the everyday traffic on Meridian and it would require making some resident parking time-sensitive, but might speed dozens of buses per hour in and out of Maverick, allowing the same number of buses to make more trips and carry more passengers.

Less drastic than a bus-only lane would be an HOV lane.

Meridian is pretty narrow, especially from Central Square to Maverick. I like the idea, but I don't think there is space. :-/

If a bus lane, similar to the way its done on Broadway in Everett would work down Meridian

But you'd have every person complaining about parking being lost..

Since bikes aren't allowed on the T at rush hour.

They are if no one enforces the rule. Can't tell you how many times I've seen people at rush hour with bikes just jam them on the train.

I find that it makes everybody calmer and generally speeds things up. ;-)

Had to get to a funeral in JP at 9am yesterday, and it took 45 min to go exactly two blocks on Meridian. We left at 7:40 and got there right at 9am. Couldn't even make it to the Callahan tunnel, had to go to the airport and take 90W.

The worst part is we left from ~90 Chelsea and could've just cut down Gove St instead of continuing down Chelsea and taking a right onto Meridian, but didn't think we needed to because traffic isn't normally that apocalyptic. We made a huge mistake.
