Feds: Pro-Trump, anti-abortion Rhode Island man threatened to dismember and eat Massachusetts professor

Haviland

Note: Both the story and the attached affidavit containing potentially triggering text.

A Rhode Island man was arrested today on federal charges of cyberstalking and transmitting a threat in interstate commerce for a series of violent anti-abortion and anti-Democratic e-mail messages he sent to a professor in Massachusetts and the admissions office at a professional school at the professor's university last month.

Matthew Haviland, 30, of North Kingstown, was scheduled for arraignment today in US District Court in Boston, the US Attorney's office in Boston reports.

According to an affidavit by a Chelsea detective working on the Boston-area Joint Terrorism Task Force, Haviland, who went to school in Boston between 2008 and 2012, issued several violent threats in a barrage of 28 e-mail messages he sent on March 10 to the professor. Officials did not identify the professor but said had published articles both in favor of abortion rights and against President Trump. WCVB reports the professor teaches at Harvard.

The messages included:

You who try to shut up people based on race, you who take a president who's taking our country in a place of more freedom rather than less, you who would brutally murder a child after they were born (or before they were born).

You are Evil. Pure evil - all Democrats must be eradicated, like the Confederates before them and among their ranks. They must be slaughtered.

You deserve to have your innards ripped from your body and savored over the flesh of all Abortion doctors.

You will have your face ripped off and eaten by me, personally. I will enjoy raping your body after you're dead.

And that will only be the start.

I will kill every Democrat in the world so we never more have to have our babies brutally murdered by you absolute terrorists. I will enjoy ripping the skin from your bodies peace by piece while you scream in agony.

A few days later, the affidavit continues, Haviland sent similar messages to the admissions office at the professor's university.

The affidavit says that the professor, alarmed at the messages, contacted police. North Kingstown Police, who had already made several wellness checks on Haviland over the preceding few months, were alerted about the messages and paid another visit to Haviland:

Haviland stated that he was only expressing his political views and has no intention of harming himself or anyone else. He admitted that some of his language had been strong. The police recommended that Haviland think about the way his statements would be interpreted by those who read or heard them and Haviland agreed that he would.

On April 4 and 5, he left roughly 114 voice messages at a Rhode Island abortion clinic about Nazis and murdered babies, the affidavit continues.

Just two days ago, he posted a YouTube video saying it would be OK to murder an abortion doctor.

In a statement, Joseph Bonavolonta, special agent in charge of the FBI Boston Division said:

Simply put, words matter, and today’s arrest of Matthew Haviland should serve as a warning to others who think they can use the internet to terrorize people. Don’t do it. Everyone has the right to express their opinion, but when you threaten, harass, intimidate, and put others in fear for their lives, it’s a federal crime.

If convicted, he faces up to five years in federal prison.

Innocent, etc.

Anti-abortion AND pro-cannibalism?! That's got to be a niche group. Like people who think you should not put bean sprouts on a sandwich because they will become tasty full-grown beans someday.

Would it be better for society to put this guy in prison or a psych ward? Kinda reminds me of that crazed art student guy who was skipping and yelling on Boylston Street a few months after the Marathon Bombing.

So long as it is "in custody" and "for a long time".

Had John Salvi the Terrorist had access to all these electronic communication methods, perhaps someone would have been able to stop him before he brutally murdered my neighbor.

Kevan was an art student and he was observing the one year anniversary of the bombing. He was dressed in a black veiled mourning hat with a pressure cooker on his back. What he was trying to communicate was the death of the pressure cooker bombing and a re-birth out of the darkness. He really is a nice kid but a little on the performance artsy side that was not well understood, he meant no harm.

Women's right to choose? Bad! Murdering people based on their political views? Good! What logic. Yup, he's a Trump voter. Our prisons are overcrowded with maniac Trump voters and members of Trumps campaign.

Besides, we know that the professor teaches in Massachusetts, more specifically, at Harvard (based on the description of his writings, I think it's safe to say we're not talking about Alan Dershowitz).

the election of Donald Trump kicked over a giant rock to expose a teeming horde of violent, socially maladapted right-wing losers, freaks, and out-and-out psychopaths.

Now try and pretend that Trump's adolescent bullying rhetoric online and at his rallies doesn't encourage these dregs of society.

I guess it's useful to know they exist, but I preferred the America where they stayed hidden in their basements instead of feeling like they got a hall pass from the Ignorant Fear-Mongering Bigot-in-Chief.

You can trick your brain into reaching whatever conclusions you wish. You and your ilk routinely do this - I'm not even mad about it. Delusions must be fun for some people I guess - there's a lot of you running around these days.

up
Voting closed 0

as *not* a right-wing loser and/or psychopath? I can’t really believe you are. Or are you?

I think if you’re unaware of a growing wave of right-wing terrorism, hate crimes and vigilantism in the last two years, you’re not paying attention. A lot of people who used to hide their anti-social, violent tendencies clearly feel emboldened these days, and they all seem to wear the same red hats. Why respect the rule of law when the Dear Leader has such obvious contempt for it?

up
Voting closed 0

Psychopath in what way? That he calls out these jack asses who whine and cry and spew propaganda about him all day every day? Maybe he’s sick and tired of these lunatics not shutting the F up for 5 minutes.

I think you’re unaware of how unhinged the left has become over the last 2 years... and either you’re not paying attention or you justify it because you’ve tricked your brain into believing the things you just stated.

Hate crimes like Jussie Smollett or what are we talking about here? The people who lit U Cal on fire because conservatives were going to give a speech at their school? Maybe the thousands of people who literally have meltdowns in public over seeing a hat? Maybe the high school kid harassed by the Indian guy and all the networks doxxing him and grown men and women making death threats against a minor who did nothing wrong? A group of girls in Texas went out with MAGA hats on, didn’t say a word to anybody, and were assaulted by random assholes, including male doormen?

There are hundreds if not thousands of these types incidents each and every day. I really can’t believe how one-sided your commentary is and the foolishness you’ve tricked yourself into believing...

*double checks username*.... oh wait, yes I can.

Really, in an age when blacks and Jews can't worship without worrying about getting slaughtered by unhinged right-wingers with heavy weaponry? Because only one side is running around with automatic weapons.

I’ve been waiting since 2007 for this. Yes, an actor who made up a 100% bullshit story and had all charges dismissed due to connections to your lord and savior, Obama. Why would it matter that he’s an actor? The whole thing was a complete lie and all of you bought his BS hook, like, and sinker. I’m surprised why that situation gets a “that’s the best you can do”... I mentioned a number of other instances that you glossed over.

How about “Easter worshippers” as your idols Hillary and Obama so eloquently put it? Nice cherry pick though. I guess the rest of my examples don’t fit your narrative and now we’re onto gun control?

Gotta remain flexible on the UHub boards, you never know what direction it’ll go.

I wrote a JS extension that would enforce a killfile on UHub. It was just for my own use, so it's ugly and requires you to update a config file to keep your list current, but it's better than reading the comments from Dougie and FISH

brainwashes me into thinking, "It's criminally wrong to make vicious threats of depraved violence to people online." But you're okay with that sort of thing. Not surprising, but thanks for outing yourself.

up

So you're not a fan of vicious threats of online violence, which I understand, but all of the incidents I mentioned earlier took place in real life and were not words on a computer screen. You conveniently didn't address any of them - maybe you were distracted being angry and calling me an asshole?

Are you really this biased? The question is rhetorical, of course, but in my mind real life violence is far far worse than fake/online violence.

your posts. Life is too short to waste parsing the gibberings of rightie mouth-breathers. But it's hard to miss the part where you keep defending this rabid right-wing criminal.

When you renounce that bit of repugnant nonsense, you can come back and talk to me about your other projectionist wingnut hobbyhorses, like how it's really the libruls who are mounting all the hate crimes since Trump got elected. In the meantime, you and your bile-spewing comrade can fuck right off.

So you make ridiculous points in your posts, someone refutes them (my initial reply wasn't even long), and you immediately dismiss it as the gibberings of a righty mouth-breather.

Nobody can cure your delusions except you - try opening up your mind a bit and stop listening to the maniacs on MSM all the time. Get outside the echo chamber, read other perspectives, you might be surprised what you find. I hate to break it to you - you're not always right, although all of you are 100% convinced you are.

I was planning to fuck right off anyway, so the joke's on you. Take it easy.

It must be annoying for idiots like your favorite pundits to constantly cry collusion and twist every word into something to send the leftist sheep into a frenzy, although that doesn’t take much nowadays. I like that Trump returns their bullshit right back to them.

Your next comment makes no sense. It’s funny how you glossed over the many examples of unhinges leftism... do you need more or do those not qualify somehow? Oh wait, that’s just the powerful reasonable left “resisting” the (insert buzzword for low IQ leftists) that our president stands for....

clouding your sense of good judgement?

I would be the first to say that the pension for some institutions of higher learning to not allow certain speakers on campus is not smart. Jussie is probably not well in the head, on some level, and is not representative of probably a good portion of those who do not think Trump is a good man or a good President.

Perhaps you think being a bully and a thug is cool and that excitement fills some sort of innate need of yours but the smug little shit that was in the "Indian guy"'s face was a smug little shit and what he did was wrong.

Some would say, Dougie, it is the "Age of the Asshole" which no one side could claim more of - there are plenty to go around for all sides.

So, best case, you are a troll that just loves to get the lefties riled up and gets really excited when they do since you can then smack them again. And again. Worst case, oh, I don't know, you are a mean SOB that has a real anger issue? I vote for the former and you can do better.

up
Voting closed 0

I don't think Trump is an angel nor have I ever said that. The fact is that everything he does, good or bad (is he capable of doing anything good in the left's eyes?) is a cause for concern or riles up lefties to say "we must resist" automatically.....I'm not sure anyone ever considers opposing viewpoints or facts. Can't quite wrap my head around it.

I don't think being a bully or thug is cool at all. If you're referring to the things Trump says in response to the constant outrage, I don't have an issue with it anymore. He cannot win with a certain segment of the population, gets attacked regardless of what his response is, so might as well give them what they want/expect.

The kid/Indian situation: the Indian beat a drum in the kid's face and he just stood there with an awkward smile on his face. He was probably scared shitless and didn't know what to do - standing quietly with an awkward look on one's face is a pretty common response. I don't know what else he should've done.

It is the Age of the Asshole - on both sides - completely agree.

It's not trolling by offering opposing viewpoints. I'm no more disrespectful/sarcastic to anyone on here than they are to me - I don't get offended nor has any communication ever riled me up in the slightest. Not sure where you see anger in anything I've ever written - on the contrary, I see it in the majority of the replies regarding politics.

First civil response I've seen in a while - it's appreciated.

When did that start?

When people decided to be considerate of others. I realize that was never part of some people's upbringing, but you can still learn.

What's the criteria?

Criteria, plural; criterion, singular. What ARE the criteria? To understand those you need to develop empathy, an awareness of others and a sense of perspective. If you have those things, you already know that hearing graphic descriptions of violence being perpetrated against someone by a psychotic is upsetting, and you act accordingly. If you need it explained to you, you're not there yet.

CNN is shallow garbage but your attempt to "both sides" this is embarrassing.

Liberal anger towards Dear Leader and his blatant ruination of this country by stoking ignorance, division, and hate can't hold a candle to the fevered rage induced by the 24/7 State Mandated Propaganda they call FOX News.
