Lucky duck

Duckling being scooped out of storm drain and the rest of her family

Duckling coming up; officers Dany Matos and Isaac Jackson rounding up Mrs. Mallard and her babies.

Two Officer Mikes who helped bystanders stop traffic on Tremont Street near BPD headquarters so that one Mrs. Mallard and her brood of 11 could safely cross the busy street at lunchtime today suddenly found themselves with a major problem: One of the ducklings they were making way for fell into a storm drain. Police report what happened next:

Officers requested Boston Water and Sewer Commission to assist in moving the sewer cover and retrieving the trapped duckling. With the assistance of Boston Water and Sewer, the duckling was rescued from the sewer and safely placed into a box with the other eleven ducklings. The ducks were transferred to Jamaica Pond by Boston Animal Control.

This is really heartwarming and I'm thrilled these ducks were saved...

BUT...

It would be nice if we showed this kind of compassion to the homeless population in our city too

You want the police to move the homeless to some other part of the city.

Give the ducklings some money so they can go buy some quack.

You'd be thrilled? How gracious of you! Get out of your bubble and volunteer at a homeless shelter instead of complaining online about cops showing a little compassion for another species. I've called cops about homeless men in distress beneath the Charlesgate overpass on several occasions and have watched Boston PD show enormous care and compassion for homeless men behaving aggressively toward themselves and twice in danger of drowning in the muddy river. Congrats keyboard warrior for being an ignorant do-nothing whiner.

The people from police, EMS, social services, Pine St, etc... who are out on the street working with the homeless population are generally compassionate. Some homeless don't want the help or the shelters and that generally has to be respected

Institutionally - as in government, public policy, and getting something done - we don't demonstrate much compassion for the homeless (especially those with compounding problems like substance abuse) or those who are around them. Needed facilities are stalled or stonewalled, some people would just like to ship everyone back to an island where they don't have to see them, they're allowed to (and abandoned to) overdose along the streets and shoot up in schoolyards, and the main response some people come up with is needle drop boxes.

is the last three photos.

OK, guys, we've brought an entire police detail out to escort the ducks, shut down a major street to accommodate them crossing it, brought in the Water and Sewer Commission truck and a full crew to shovel (!) the duckling out of the storm drain, and safely reunited baby duck with its mom. What do we do now?

Oh, I dunno, we didn't really think that part through. Let's just put the ducks in this printer paper box, and bring 'em to the nearest pond ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Two cops are an “entire police detail”?
