Beverly man to admit he sent letters with white powder and fake HIV-infected blood to online dating service after it kicked him off

Liam MacLeod of Beverly plans to plead guilty later this month to charges of mailing threatening communications and conveying false information and hoaxes for a series of angry letters he will admit he sent to the corporate offices of OKCupid between September and December, 2017, according to filings in federal court.

US District Court Judge Patti Saris set a June 20 hearing on the plea change by MacLeod, who was arrested this past February.

According to an affidavit by a postal inspector involved in the case, the first letter contained a white powder that the author claimed was anthrax, along with a note that started:

Greetings from Beverly
Ban me willya
Welcome to the wonderful world of ANTHRAX

Another was stained with a dark-red substance he claimed was the blood of a suicidal, dying AIDS patient treated with a chemical to keep the virus alive for a week, others were smeared with a dark brown substance, according to an affidavit by a postal inspector involved in the case. Lab tests showed none of the letters actually contained any harmful substances, the affidavit states, adding MacLeod also claimed to be the son of a Hell's Angels member and threatened to blow up or damage OKCupid executives' cars.

All the letters were postmarked in Boston.

Thanks to the information in the letters, OKCupid didn't have much trouble tracking down MacLeod's account: The service looked for users from Beverly who had been banned in September. Modern database technology being what it is, they quickly found one, a guy banned the day before the postmark on the first letter for violations of his OKCupid account. The billing name on the account: Liam MacLeod.

OKCupid did not specify the violations - for the account MacLeod had set up only on Aug. 22 - but inspectors found a profile MacLeod set up around the same time on Match.com, in which he expressed anger at the quality of women on that service and told anybody reading it they'd find cheaper prostitutes on Craigslist, the affidavit states. In one of the letters, MacLeod complained about the "whores" on OKCupid.

After the second letter, OKCupid went to the FBI. The postal inspector on the case says that after learning of MacLeod's name on the account, he queried the RMV database - and found just one Liam MacLeod, with an address in Beverly, and with a photo that matched those posted on OKCupid and Match.com

Given his age of 47.

This guy appears to have some mental stability issues so honestly, mailing fake harmful substances is the best possible case vs. a mass shooting. God bless America.

I can't imagine why he was having such a difficult time finding a date.

Other UHub posters say this all the time, so I feel like I’m beating a dead horse here, but in the online dating world such as this, 5% of the guys have 95% of the success and the remaining losers get to pick over what’s left. Imagine being this guy, having very little success with women, he pays money and signs into a few dating sites thinking the pool is so big that he is bound to get a few bites. Instead, he experiences rejection on a grand scale - hundreds of women. It’s a more painful rejection too. In person, a woman would smile and come up with a convenient excuse to brush off his advances but here most ignore him and the few that respond are rude. And the women seem way more choosy, slovenly women demanding guys over 6’, since the overwhelming majority of the site’s members are male.

The lesson here is that winners win and losers lose, no matter the forum. Don’t try to be something you’re not. This guy would have been better off joining a church, playing in a kickball league, going to a Comic-Con convention, joining a pro life protest group... at least there he could gain some confidence. Play to your strengths.

you forgot the bit about society teaching men they're entitled to the attention of any woman they want, which is why men do things like this - or worse - and why we are taught from very young to be as polite as possible or we may suffer the consequences. because it's somehow our fault that we're not interested. so your bit about "choosy women" is pretty far off base.

this is about people who know or don't know how to interact with other people. it has nothing to do with "winners" and "losers", a mentality that only serves to further motivate these incel types.

and I certainly don't see how joining an anti-choice group would help someone incapable of respecting women, except to encourage such a view.

In your 3 paragraphs, you make no point that is contrary to anything I have posted. You just don’t like the tone or something, I guess.

I'd say it was content tbh. Giving you the benefit of the doubt, you got halfway there by identifying some possible causes (you missed a lot of important ones), but you failed to make the crucial distinction between causes and excuses. Paying money may have been one factor in fueling his resentment, but that's a resentment based in entitlement and unreasonable expectations. That's the problem that needs to be addressed.

You didn't like my tone or something, I guess. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Women do not owe men their attention, nor do they owe men any ego salving grace.

The fact that this guy was kicked off a dating forum speaks volumes as to why he got no satisfaction: he's got some serious problems and is potentially dangerous to engage.

You have put up some Good Posts over the years, SwirlyGrrl but I have no respect for your recent work which includes inarticulate profanity and purported science like “vaping increases the risk of heart attacks 400%.” Seriously, you post like a drooling mong.

I offer excellent advice and commentary on all sorts of topics like building materials, dating, health, movies, and Internet Posting. You should try engaging with me on some of it so we can once again be friends.

When you write this nonsense:

"In person, a woman would smile and come up with a convenient excuse to brush off his advances but here most ignore him and the few that respond are rude. And the women seem way more choosy, slovenly women demanding guys over 6’, since the overwhelming majority of the site’s members are male."

Then yeah, you're laying out expectations that IRL women should be nice to random creeps vs. ignoring them when they give women unwanted and unrequested attention.

Google the law of supply and demand and then check back on how that applies to women being 'more choosy' when they are in the minority on the dating site.

Very on brand and on topic though to assume a woman is friends with you after the briefest of non-negative interaction.

..and you certainly have some intellectual breadth. So why are you trying so hard to give me a hard time? - “Laying out expectations”, no, bro, that’s an unfair inference among many which are possible there, don’t you think? “Google supply and demand,” huh? did you read the last line of the part of my post which you quoted? “Friendship with SwirlyGrrl”, ok that’s just harsh and unnecessary, I believe she has liked my posts in the past but no need to rub it in.

What have I ever done to you other than support a website and community which we both know and love?
