South Bay jail guard beaten just outside the jail in possible robbery attempt

UPDATE: One arrest made.

A guard at the South Bay House of Correction was in his car, arriving at work, this morning when he was beaten by several people on Atkinson Street, the Suffolk County Sheriff's Department reports.

The department says the officer was not yet in uniform when somebody reached through his open window and hit him.

At this time, it is unclear how he came to exit the car, but once outside of the vehicle, it is reported that he was surrounded by multiple people who began to strike and attack him. While the reason for the assault currently remains unconfirmed, the motive is suspected to be attempted robbery. The officer is alert and currently being seen by medical professionals.

Is more dangerous than the southern border and not a peep is heard from our political leaders.

It's disgusting what's happening on Meth Mile. Build the bridge back to Long Island!! It gets worse by the week. It now smells like human excrement. The population is increasing exponentially and you're correct law enforcement doesn't have the power to do anything since addition is now a diseases. I want to rename it "Martin's Mile".

Reminds me of the New Amsterdam section of town in the Wire. Unfortunately it's expensive to institutionalize everyone for loitering and trespassing down there.

FBI - Perkins: "The thing that's most concerning to me is really the out-of-control violence that is on the Mexican side of the border that we're seeing … And it's not just 7,000 murders, it's the brutal violence, it's torture, it's the complete and utter disregard for human life all based upon the greed and the wealth that's coming from drug trafficking."

Just open their mouths without thinking

If Methadone Mile were, in fact, as bad as the Southern Border we'd have the National Guard here by now.

Most people don't actually see what's going on along Southampton, they hear it through tv and radio or generalizations from someone they know.

The truth is that yes it's horrible. And it's gotten noticeably worse in the past 7 to 10 years.

People living in the lower end have been screaming about it for almost a decade but nobody seems to care.

Does anybody really believe this was a robbery? It sounds to me like an organized beat down of a prison guard

Should we consider it a “rodent infested mess”?

Something has to be done before more innocent people get killed or seriously injured.

No one dares do anything about the CHAOS occurring in that area. Boston is totally paralyzed because no one is allowed to enforce the law in what is an ever enlarging radius around the Rox tollbooth.

This is where city officials need to step up and do something. That’s why they are elected (we can debate on that one later). I know Boston is in a legal battle with Quincy over the bridge, it seems to be moving forward though (slowly). This problem started long before Marty, Menino allowed the bridge to become in such disrepair it needed to be torn down. Quincy needs to get real and realize their community in on the Mile too!!

I saw a group of tourist being surrounded by the Meth Zombies. Once you’re on the mile, there’s not a lot of turning back on that addition mindset.

This:

is the problem--in a nutshell. It's quite unfortunate.

Has 6 photos of Atkinson St starting in 2009. All the photos up to 2017 show the sidewalks fairly clear of people, whereas the 2018 has a number of people congregating around one of the parking lot entrances.
The earlier versions have lots of cars parked on the street, the later ones have few cars parked on the street. Don't know if that is just the time of day or day of week or if people figured out it is a bad idea to park cars there

Bing doesn't offer the multiple versions, but it is pretty much just cars parked along the street. Seems to have same blue SUV that appears in the google version.

This video shows a lot of people who just seem to be hanging out.

Not sure why you think few people park there any more. There are plenty of cars in every view, including the most recent in September 2018. Except for one stretch on the left where the city posted signs reserving parking for fire trucks, and painted the curb red.

If the Twitter video linked to by downtown-anon is of this incident, it tells a bit of a different story than the one officially reported.

You clearly see the guy get out of his car a then sucker punch a guy in the face. THEN he gets jumped and beaten by a large crowd of people. Seems like nobody dragged the guy out of the car at all, he hopped and started swinging first.

Atkinson St is now Boston’s tent city. Rampant drug use, public sex in exchange for drugs or money, human excrement, hundreds (if not thousands of used syringes), garbage, etc. Bystanders try to intimidate those administering Narcan during an overdose. Sadly, cleaning up the area will only push it somewhere else and no one has real solutions.
