Campaign roundup: When McCarthy blasted the 'nonsense people' who endorsed Arroyo; at-large candidates debate housing, opioids
Update: McCarthy apologizes for "muddled" comments not meant to attack anybody.
On the night of the preliminary election in September, outgoing District 5 City Councilor Tim McCarthy tried to rev up supporters of his aide and would-be successor Maria Esdale Farrell, who won a slot in the November final by coming in second against Ricardo Arroyo to represent Hyde Park, Roslindale and Mattapan. In a pep talk at Farrell's party at Antonio's Bacaro in Hyde Park, McCarthy noted Farrell got on the final ballot running against women and minorities and railed against the "nonsense people" who had endorsed Arroyo (at the time, they included state Rep. Russell Holmes and Suffolk County Sheriff Steve Tompkins; they have since been joined by US Rep. Ayanna Pressley, who now lives in Hyde Park):
Speaking to a virtually all-white crowd, Bos City Councillor @McCarthy4Boston said this about Farrell's win in the prelims:
"We ran against women,
we ran against minorities,
we ran against nonsense people [...] b/c they don't have boots on the ground..." Big yikes, dude. #bospoli pic.twitter.com/AEl5bPmy3R— Chipper the Ripper (@chipgoines) October 23, 2019
WBUR reports on a forum it held for the eight candidates for the four at-large council seats open next month.
On opioids, incumbent Michelle Wu questioned whether the money and time it would take to build a new treatment campus on Long Island - $92 million just for the bridge, construction of which could take three to five years under the best of circumstances - might better be used for other treatment programs. Incumbent Michael Flaherty repeated his calls for suburban towns to do more to help their residents who end up being cared for by Boston after they wind up at Mass and Cass. Challenger David Halbert said it's time for supervised injection sites, where addicts could shoot up under medical supervision - and with help to get into treatment programs.

Well he’s kinda right
Nowadays youre called a sexist if you don’t vote for the women in the race and racist if you don’t vote for the minority.
Shit same thing if you criticize them or their ideas.
Oh boy.
Here we go.
Nah this ain't it chief
You get called sexist if you act sexist, racist if you act racist.
But keep hiding behind those dog whistles and "iTs jUst mY oPiNioN" hot takes.
"Chief"??? um, that's racist.
um that's racist - try harder
Adam - should spin be banned for hate speech?
Don't hurt your back building up that strawman
https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/chief
So it fits for addressing OP. Next!
Quick google search to explain away your racist term. whew!
woke status preserved - thanks google!
Now right back to calling everyone else racist in 3, 2, 1...
Bad faith arguments are cute
But then again weaponizing things like that are a hallmark of self aware wolves.
I guess the surprising thing here are the upvotes you're getting, either we got a lot of alt-reich clowns lurking here that got their fee fees hurt or you've got a few burner accounts to get those numbers up.
Either way it's pretty sad. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Classic hate-filled "progressive" response
Disagree with someone, then resort to calling them a nazi.
I knew that would come out sooner or later - how typical.
Sad indeed.
Conservative projection, iteration eleventy
billion. The script:
1: Conservative fuckwit punches down at a minority, using ugly, bigoted language, sometimes coded, sometimes overt.
2: Bystanders point and jeer, observing, “What an asshole. GTFO of here with that hateful crap.”
3: Conservative starts blubbering like a child, crying about Other People Hating.
Such a tiresome, simple-minded, obvious routine. Stop fooling yourself that it works on anyone that graduated from middle school.
Haha and there it is
You're projecting too much now, I never insinuated you were a nazi, just that you're getting upvoted by alt-reich clowns or you have a few burner accounts.
You wanna be an edge lord and carry water for racists/sexists, well you might end up catching some fleas or bedbugs if you're Brett Stephens.
But I guess it could be some fragile MRAs too, tends to be quite the venn diagram overlap between those groups.
Kansas City Chiefs
Football are getting pressure to change their name. With all this foolishness.
I mean they should change it Red, its not foolish
Kansas City Chiefs is pretty well documented as being a racist logo/name, so naturally I expect you to ignore the facts related to that.
Might be thinking of the Redskins?
I didn’t think the Chiefs had any negative reactions to their name/logo. Maybe a few.
Fair, it's more the antics and mascot
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Native_American_mascot_controversy#
https://www.grandforksherald.com/news/3862967-native-american-groups-pro...
It's still wildly racist and not foolish to oppose like Red implied. But I understand your point.
It's almost like
you're a troll spitting out horseshit to the other white supremacists on this site.
Ok buddy
See every election. We need to elect a (insert identifier).
Wait till Wu runs for mayor
And then tell me im wrong.
Why wait til then?
We already know you're wrong.
"You get called sexist if you
"You get called sexist if you act sexist, racist if you act racist."
This is 2019. Those rules went out the window some time ago.
I mean not really Patricia
Could argue that the "rules" are just being better enforced now.
You're both wrong.
I voted for Capuano over Pressley last year because I had concerns of losing senior membership on the Transportation committee in the US House. Since then, I've really been impressed with Pressley's leadership as well as her new initiative just recently formed on transportation in the House. No one has ever called me a racist nor sexist for casting my ballot for Capuano.
I really get tired of this stupid rhetoric, because that's what it is: stupid.
No, you're called sexist and
No, you're called sexist and racist when you denigrate your opponents because they are women or minorities.
Nope
No, you aren't.
Not even close.
What's a charitable read here?
Obviously, you can read "nonsense" as meaning "non-white" or "not in our group." And then infer that McCarthy, and those who stand with him, have some noxious views on important issues.
But let's say I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt.
What would that look like? What's a meaning of "nonsense" here that doesn't make him out to be a bigot, with regard to gender and race? Any supporters, what do you think he means by "nonsense"?
The most charitable view is
The most charitable view is that he means "liberals." Doesn't matter much since he already called out women and people of color in his statement but I think that's probably what he meant by "nonsense people." He's not a big fan of the liberals in his district and had made that known before. Looking forward to him being gone.
bye Timmy
You can join Rob 'the Hack' Consalvo in the annals of local reps who will not be missed. I assume he'll also have a patronage gig like Consalvo. Maybe he can help Rob take more outdoor spaces from BPS schools to hand over to the private sector.
https://www.wgbh.org/news/education/2019/10/17/dorchester-school-communi...
Parkwayne you don't seem to worry about BPS
When you want to stick Roxbury Prep Charter School in Roslindale/West Roxbury
Tim's bio helps highlight the fraud that is
the "Harvard Business School Program for Management Development."
You too can be a "graduate" of the Dec. 2019-July 2020 program at the low, low price of $52,000. Previous education not required!
https://www.exed.hbs.edu/leadership-development/#admissions
we can play that game
Ayanna Pressley College Degree - NONE
A General Studies major ??? Not sure what that includes. Left school
Look at Mayor Menino UMASS Boston graduate at 41 years old did okay.
Mayor Walsh - BC Night School. Doing okay
It's not a criticism of Tim,
it's a criticism of Harvard and the nonsense degrees and certificates that it sells to anybody who's willing to pay, including this one and a wide range of "public administration" products at the Kennedy School.
Harvard is not alone
Look at any local college, 60K a year and the student majors in sociology, philosophy, general studies etc worthless degrees. No jobs. No wonder student debt is sky high. You have to major in accounting, finance, IT, engineering etc.
Arroyo
Didn't both his father and brother run into problems. One had to step down because of what.
Thats right Sexual Harassment
and Pops got suspended because no one knew what he did.
Red are you forgetting to log out of your alternate accounts?
Like come on, you were kinda hiding it not so well in the Centre street threads but this is just lazy even for you.
Pressley
Talk about Hack jobs. Didn't her husband get a cushy job under Wlash, but left it because of why? LOL
Why would you even post this
He mentioned women and minorities. Who knows what he means Nonsense people but I don't think it's racial. He is endorsing a woman on top of it all.
I mean in the other City Council race the final 8, you have 6 women, transgender and a gay woman, the 2 men one is black who didn't even grow up in Boston.
How much diverse to we need it to be?
The classic. 'Didn't grow up in Boston'
Who fucking cares where you grew up? Dapper O'Neil grew up here and was a complete piece of garbage. See also Bulgers, Whitey and Billy, and countless others.
McCarthy won't be living in city limits in 4 years, that's my prediction.
Watch your Language Parkwayne
Just watch it
Watch it how?
Was I not clear?
Billy Bulger, Whitey Bulger, Dapper O'Neil are all excellent examples of terrible people who were poisonously bad for Boston and grew up here. So growing up here means nothing. Ray Flynn's another one- apologized for decades for the rapist priests of the Catholic Church and blamed the victims but hey, he's from Southie!
I don't believe in Hell but I hope it's real so Bulger, O'Neil and Flynn can all get together to talk about the good old days with their pal Cardinal Law (Law of course was born in Mexico so I'm sure you don't like him.)
All the White, Irish, Catholic Guys
All going to hell. Nice.
Not even close
How you get from complaining about Dapper O'Neil, the Bulgers, and Ray Flynn to "All the white, Irish, Catholic guys" is a mystery.
Don't do to the crime if you can't do the time
Just want to be sure we're on the same page: being a racist like Dapper is OK? Blaming rape victims for the actions of priests like Flynn is OK? Being a literal murderer like Whitey is OK?
I don't like Flaherty and won't be voting for him but he's not a bad person. Steve Lynch is very much not my kind of guy, but again, not on the same level as the guys you're defending here, seemingly only because they're white Irish Catholics? How about Matt O'Malley? He's fine. I voted for John Connolly - he's another white Irish Catholic. Sen. Mike Rush seems fine but I wish he'd do more with his office, also white Irish Catholic. Etc...
If you think all white Irish guys are good, google 'the Troubles' sometime.
You didn't have a choice
Connolly was running against another white Irish Guy. I can't vote for O'Malley again. Useless.
Glad you agreed with the rest of it.
I assume you mean you can't vote for O'Malley again because you've moved to Canton, right? Or Bridgewater?
No still in West Roxbury
I just can't vote for a person worrying about Plastic Bags.
Which includes the Mayor.
Which includes the Mayor.
If you think a murderer and a
If you think a murderer and a despicable rape apologist represent all white Irish Catholic guys, that's your right, but you're literally the only person on this page making that leap.
You are right I forgot about Chuck Turner and
Diane Wilkerson ( oops they didn't grown up in Boston)
"Nonsense people"
You don't think it's news when a city councilor insults a state rep (and the county sheriff)? It was actually three state reps - Nika Elugardo and Jon Santiago also endorsed Arroyo before the preliminary - but Holmes has more of a direct interest in District 5.
It is funny though "All White Group"
Has to be mentioned when McCarthy is talking. But the Nonsense people you mentioned are all minorities. Why put that in post "ALL WHITE" Doesn't seem right
Are you really as dumb and obnoxious as you appear
to be here, or are you just a sad, lonely troll? Neither is a good look, son.
No i am just
A White Irish Catholic conservative Bostonian that has different views than most on this website. What do you want all Liberal outsiders giving their views and patting themselves on the back.
congrats
what a martyr.
that was a cool conversation you had with yourself up there.
I'm going with dumb and obnoxious. You
aren't clever enough to be a decent troll.
On the *other* other hand, you could be a dim 12-year-old: that would fit the facts, too.
Is it too much to ask that
Is it too much to ask that you find an *honest, competent* white Irish Catholic conservative to support? I don't expect you to agree with me on policy; I hope you agree that rape and multiple murder are wrong even if the criminals sit next to you in church.
Full list of Pre-September 24th endorsers
District Attorney Rachael Rollins
Sheriff Steve Tompkins
City Councilor Michelle Wu
City Councilor Kim Janey
Clerk of Courts Maura Hennigan
Reps Elugardo, Holmes, Santiago
State Senator Sonia Chang Diaz
I may have missed a few but saw all these on his social medias.
I don't see how any of those are "nonsense".
it is funny that they are all
Minorities, except Hennigan who has the same type of hack job as Arroyo's father.
I don't see any all stars on that list
Rachel Rollins?? Tomkins? come on. If fact pretty much nonsense group.
Can you run that story about Wu's kid who didn't get a spot at the Charles Sumner but he went to work with her and at the end of the day He had a spot. Amazing how that worked out.
My goodness yourself
If you perhaps learned to read better, you'd know the issue was not that Wu used her connections to get her kid into the Sumner, but that she was told he was accepted and then BPS screwed up the paperwork and so he was suddenly unaccepted and had no school to go to at all. While I'm sure the fact that she's a city councilor made it easier for her to get the mistake fixed, the fact remains that BPS screwed things up, not her.
Also, maybe you think it's easy to get elected to a countywide position like Rollins and so that means nothing. When will we be seeing your name on the ballot? The job pays six figures, after all.
i saw where Rollins backed
Markey. Or as Howie calls him "Mr. Frosty"
I think Chip is the real story here.
McCarthy's stupid comment notwithstanding, can we talk about Chip? How does that guy hold down a job at Harvard when he's tweeting about #bospoli a hundred times a day under multiple accounts? Why is he so personally invested when he, admittedly, doesn't live work or play in the city? Is he a former Menino guy that has an ax to grind? A former Walsh employee that was fired? Are his bosses at Harvard unaware? Or is he doing it for them?
I feel like he must have an interesting story.
Agenda much?
Mother of gawd, that guy is busy on social media. With his donzens and donzens of tweets and retweets, on might think he had an agenda, or was working on someons behalf. weird.
And you say he doesn't even live in the district? Why so concerned about the district 5 race then? Hmmmm
Seems legit.
In case you are unfamilar with how Twitter works
It's remarkably easy to post and retweet stuff - lots and lots of stuff - and takes very little time at all. Just look at my feed - I can assure you I don't spent a lot of my time composing tweets. It's the one thing I have in common with the Quid Pro Quoer in Chief, except I don't normally tweet at 4 a.m.
Chip Goines does post an
Chip Goines does post an insane amount of #bospoli content on Twitter for a guy ostensibly holding down a day job. He also identified as living in Somerville at one point pretty recently. Maybe he moved into Boston since. Either way, he has an unhealthy obsession with Marty Walsh that is pretty evident from his tweets, for one. None of that changes the fact that McCarthy's comments are gross and the real issue here.
But for most of us working for "the man"
posting on social media on the clock is a fireable offense.
Anyone can debate
Anyone can debate homelessness and opioids (a hand-in-hand issue). But nothing will ever get done.
McCarthy apologizes
McCarthy posts:
Nonsense
Usually, an apology would accompany an admission of wrongdoing. Here, McCarthy admits to expressing himself in a muddled manner and conveying his meaning poorly. And he apologizes to anyone who misunderstood his intent.
At no point does he address the substance of the complaint: that he dismissed those who endorsed Arroyo as “nonsense” people, and professed pride in having succeeded against “women and minorities.”
If apologized to my wife like that, there would not be a lot of cuddling that night.
I still don’t know exactly what he meant—but no one’s proffered an interpretation that doesn’t cast him as a bigot.
Maybe he’ll issue an apology for having issued a weaselly apology.
Then we can cuddle.
ha
Not an apology.
