Owner of drain and pipe company gets two years in jail for drowning deaths of two workers

WBZ reports that a Suffolk Superior Court judge this morning sentenced Kevin Otto, owner of Atlantic Drain Service of Roslindale, to two years in jail for the deaths of two of his workers in a trench at Dartmouth and Tremont streets in the South End in 2016.

The judge stayed the sentence until Dec. 31 to let Otto's attorney file a motion for reconsideration of the October guilty verdict against Otto and his company on two counts of manslaughter. Robert Higgins and Kelvin Mattocks died when the trench they were working in collapsed and snapped a hydrant connection, filling the trench with water.

If Atlantic Drain gets to keeping doing business as usual, then what's the point of convicting the company along with the owner? I would hope ban from municipal business for a year or severe fines would be coming.

That company deserved to be fined and forced out of business. It serves them right.

Sounds reasonable. Sarcasm off.

If he ran over them with a truck he would have no penalties at all.

That's it. If he behaves, he probably will get early release. I followed this story, it's very sad. If anyone had doubts that life is cheap; just look at this story.

from owning or running a company which does excavations where people will be below ground level, which seems just and apt.

I'm not surprised at all. That company has been shady as hell for years. It's really sad that it took this tragedy to finally put them out of business. I worked for a plumber who had a longstanding contract with them. It was like pulling teeth to get them to pay their bills, they were always rude or flat out non-responsive. Very sad.
