Police: Guys with loaded guns crash car in Brigham Circle; arrested after brief foot chase

Boston Police report arresting men from Hyde Park and Mattapan on gun charges after they tried to speed away from a traffic stop only to crash their car, then fail to outrun responding police officers.

Police say Zion Ford, 20, of Hyde Park, and Amani Perkins, 20, of Mattapan, blew through a red light at Ruggles and Leon streets shortly before 2 a.m. Officers on patrol spotted them and had just pulled them over "when the vehicle took off at a high rate of speed, continuing on Ruggles Street before turning left onto Huntington Avenue," police say, adding:

A short time later, the officers came upon the suspect vehicle which appeared to have crashed into a pole at the intersection of Huntington Avenue and Calumet Street. Officers observed one suspect, later identified as Zion Ford, 20, of Hyde Park, remove an unknown object from the operator’s area of the vehicle and place it into the waistband of his pants before fleeing on foot. Simultaneously, a second suspect, later identified as Amani Perkins, 20, of Mattapan, was observed initially picking up an unknown object from the rear passenger area of the vehicle but quickly dropped the object upon seeing the officers and also fled on foot. The officers pursued both suspects on foot and placed them in custody a short distance away on Huntington Avenue. The officers performed a pat frisk of both suspects at which time they recovered a loaded 9mm Glock 17 handgun from Zion Ford’s waistband. The officers then returned to the suspect motor vehicle where they recovered a loaded .40 caliber Glock 23 handgun from inside the rear passenger compartment where Amani Perkins had been observed discarding an object.

Both were charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition and carrying a loaded firearm, police say.
