pay freezes vs layoffs? come on

my company recently cut everyones hours from 40 back to 37.5. I am happy to still have a job. lets be honest and i can be because i worked for the city for a few years and a lot of these jobs are not the toughest jobs in the world. how stupid/stubborn can people be not to realize the situation we're in and accept a pay freeze? would they rather have what happened in fall river? its time for everyone to buckle down and be happy they have jobs. city of boston employees have been feeding at the trough for many many years. its time for them face reality and accept these pay freezes.

Why March 15th?

I don't get it - the city is fine through June when the fiscal year ends. They aren't going to lay anyone off from the school dept. before June and probably no cops or firefighters either. So why does the city need an answer by March 15th before the Mayor even puts the numbers on the table. Why doesn't he just show the city the budget - explain why and where the hardships are and then let the people weigh in on his decisions. This all seems very odd behavior.

There are persistent rumors of a rainy day fund. There is speculation that the books are cooked, there was a post here a while ago that said basically, because of prop 2 1/2, the tax base goes up $70 mill right off the bat. It's Kevin from heaven and politics all over again. He's pitting fire against EMS against the BPD. Divide and conquer. It sux, but is no surprise. Then he rewards his own people.
