According to www.urbancoyoteresearch.com, coyotes losing their fear of, and becoming habituated to, humans is a major concern. We're supposed to try to scare them off. Not sure I would be brave enough to overcome my instinct to walk very quickly in the other direction, though.

I've encountered coyotes a few times while walking in Mt. Auburn Cem. in Cambridge... typically they stare at you for what seems like a minute or less, then calmly trot away. Soon there will be no room left for this kind of wildlife to be away from humans with all of the hysteria for development of every square inch of land.Thank goodness Wal-Marts and condos can't be built in cemeteries!

Just make some noise to try to scare them off. You are correct, once they become habituated to an area or to humans - usually because people feed them - it is essentially a death sentence for the animal. I was in Death Valley in September and traffic on Badwater Rd. was at stop while a coyote walked among the cars, begging for food. He was totally comfortable on the road among people, walked right up to my car like he was asking for spare change on Methadone Mile. Just a few days later I saw a post from the ranger service that a coyote had been hit and killed in the exact spot. Tragic.

...I've been wary of urban wildlife ever since I was chased by a raccoon on Mass Ave in front of the main building at MIT, probably 20 years ago. I was just minding my own business walking down the sidewalk, and never having seen a raccoon in real life, stopped maybe 20 feet away to look. In retrospect, that might have seemed threatening to the creature, especially if there were babies nearby. Or maybe it was just ornery. Or rabid. Regardless, I sure didn't hang around to investigate further :-)

This morning we had coyote tracks across our yard, for the first time this fall/winter. The den is down near Walker Pond, and Watertown PD warns everyone they're around, but I hadn't seen them for a while.

The few I've seen we spooked each other except I just stood there and the coyote silently disappeared. Like MAGIC!

One juvenile though did not seem to be bothered by my presence, so (on my bike) I gave chase, it turned around once it heard me, saw me gaining on it, and bolted off trail.

That's what I wanted. For that pup to realize that humans SUCK.
