Time to play New Orange Line Train Lottery again

New train, with bonus cameraman, at Forest Hills this morning.

The MBTA reports it's figured out a fix for what was causing weird noises to emanate from the wheel area of the new Orange Line trains and so it's, very cautiously, putting one of them back into service today:

Since being taken out of service, we have identified & implemented a fix addressing the cause of the issue. The train will run periodically as we continue to monitor & test the new vehicles.

Also:

The refinements & lessons learned now help ensure that this train, and future trains on the Orange & Red Lines, will be able to perform as designed for the duration of their service lives. We appreciate our riders’ patience as we work to return the new vehicles back into service.

I won the new-train lottery this morning and arrived at my destination safely, quickly, and without unnecessary noises. Which feels like I'm jinxing a no-hitter in the first inning, but it was a welcome treat.

when a door is open, when a door is closing, when an announcement is made, can we band together and ask them to shut that off? If a train "stands by" at a station it beeps for the *entire duration* as long as the doors are open.

requirement as far as beeping. However, it's possible the volume does not need to be so high.

There can't possibly be a requirement for so much loud beeping and multiple warnings as occurs on the new trains. Otherwise, every other public transit vehicle I've ever used in the USA has been out of compliance. In New York for example, you hear the announcement "Stand clear of the closing doors, please" at a reasonable volume, and that's about it.

I usually have headphones on because it keeps me from thinking terrible things about my fellow human beings who decide that a crowded train is a suitable place for a phone call

a small beep or so isn't the worst thing in the world either.

Are these trains quieter than the old trains?

I understand that this is what most people care about, but for the more technical-inclined folk out here, you'd think they could have told us what the problem was and what they did to fix it. I'd like to know.

I don't expect them to get into details, but at least say what the part was and if they replaced or modified it.

Will be interesting if the same part/area is the cause of future problems.

They modified the bolster assembly

The T had to do something after the Herald front page exposed the overtime fiasco. A t-cop made 300,000 dollars last year and probably didn't make an arrest or ride a train hop on a bus. The noise should be angry taxpayers calling the Governors office to complain about mismanagement.

To be honest, those "weird noises" were me. Screaming.

As Edgar Winter sang, come on and have a free ride. There is an open gate for the red line at the Downtown Crossing concourse, has been open for over an hour and a half.

Must be a momentous day in history. Judging by the size of his camcorder, that guy traveled forward in time from the last time there were new Orange Line cars.
