Brookline bans lines of more than 10 people at restaurants; lifts ban on styrofoam food containers

Ed note: An earlier version of this story incorrectly said Brookline had set a 5 p.m. curfew on restaurants, because ye ed can't read.

Brookline officials today banned lines of more than 10 people at restaurants and bars - but has lifted its ban on styrofoam containers, to help restaurants speed up preparation of takeout and delivery orders - as part of a town declaration of a state of emergency due to Covid-19.

All restaurants have to close their dining areas at 5 p.m. today, as part of the governor's ban on restaurant dining. Takeout and delivery can continue, but with the line provision - which applies to both the inside and outside of establishments.

To further speed things up, town police and the DPW will be marking off parking spaces near restaurants for use only by people picking up food.

I can't find anything about this online. Is this just for today, or indefinitely?

And so, if you show up and you're number 11, what do you do? Or do we just start lines outside or at 6' intervals?

Online ordering, delivery and other methods will help. But still, what if I show up and I'm number 11?

I sort of understand the rationale and logic behind the sentiment, however the 10 person limit seems hard-to-enforce at the very least.

If you go to a restaurant and they don't have an available table, you wait outside or at the bar - that's the way its always worked? Restaurants are in some cases just removing the chairs from the 'extra' tables so there are only ten chairs. It's as easy to enforce (by the restaurants) as seating capacity has always been.

I was walking through Davis square early this afternoon. Passed by a pizza place---there were about four different tables occupied by people eating pizza.

Then walked by Diesel cafe. Not the usual crowd, but still about half the tables occupied by seated patrons.

I'm glad that people are going out and supporting local businesses and all, but I thought it was take out / delivery only.

Don't you just end up with a line to get in line, etc, even if you shoo them off the property? Doesn't make any sense.

Why don't we just try it, even if we cant enforce it 100%. I would assume at least some percent of the population would be responsible and self-enforce. Every bit of extra distancing we can do helps.
