Everybody's trying to duck this virus

Make Way for Ducklings in Masks

As he wandered through a pandemic-stricken region, Greg Cook came across the statue honoring Make Way for Ducklings in Masks in the Public Garden.

They've still got their St. Patty's day stuff and that's some quality stuff. The masks will remain until the next snow storm I'd bet.

couldn't get or spread COVID-19.

Don't forget avian flu.

Coronaviruses have a propensity to species-hop; SARS-CoV-2 probably jumped from bats via pangolins, or via some other mammal.

I don't think it's going to be a major factor in this outbreak, though. :-)

A cardiac/pulmonary surgeon and dog breeder who’s a family friend said that dogs can get ill from this with at least one fatality in Italy. (I’m reluctant to pass this on as I have no research sources and I don’t want to spread unnecessary fear and suspect the level of contact needed for transmission is totally different.) Personally we are still considering the dog park at Stoddard’s Neck an acceptable level of risk.

Influenza tends to be a duck duck pig human sort of thing.

but the more common and less protective droplet barrier masks.

It still makes me a little uncomfortable, but I'd make a small allowance in the name of art.

People in the restaurant/supermarket line of work are looking for masks, period. They're waiting in lines, paying exorbitant prices online, etc for masks so that they can at least have the illusion of staying safe while performing their essential work.

Art should not come before the wellbeing of some of the worst-paid workers in our society.

I don’t think they are real masks. A real mask would wrap completely around one of the dilucklings’ heads.

It's hard to get a sense of scale, but in one of the shots you can see the pavers. Yeah, those are tiny, mock masks.

You'd really have to have your ducks in a row to get that many masks!

President Trump's prescient China travel ban has really saved the country and prevented the Corona virus from causing any significant loss of life here. The US mortality rate from the virus is now under 1% and dropping fast. The ducks need the masks as much as most people do, which is not at all. With Trump presiding over a decrease in opioid deaths and accidental deaths almost totally eliminated for for 2+ weeks (stay at home, social distancing) we may actually see an increase in life expectancy thanks to President Trump. As Governor Cuomo (D-NY) has been accurately saying of the virus, "the facts don't justify the fear."

It hasn't prevented any such thing, but I guess you don't consider loss of life to be "significant" unless it's you. As we speak, people are being sent home to die. The fatality rate is 1.3% as of yesterday and will probably rise as more people are tested. You're a liar and not a pretty one.

Reporters asked him good questions and he pivoted every answer into patting himself on the back for something else. I have no problem with a President with whom I have policy differences, but Jesus Christ, how can anyone stand the constant, blatant lies?

You don't have the faintest grasp of reality, do you?

"prescient" would have been issuing a travel ban and other measures back in January, you know, when this started being a thing that epidemiologists and scientists were warning about. What we have here is a case of "shutting the barn door after the horse is out".

Also, why does Trump get credit for everyone staying home? People were doing that long before he said anything about it, and in fact people started doing it while he was saying it wasn't a big deal and nothing to worry about. Say, remember when we were supposed to be down to zero cases within a few days of the end of February?.

How can you say that the Coronavirus hasn’t caused significant deaths here when it’s still spreading? The United States is sixth in the world in total number of deaths and fifth in new deaths. We’re number two for active cases and number five for serious/critical cases. And that’s without anywhere near the amount of testing being done that should be. So how about saving your Trump worship until it’s over?
