Driver suffers only minor injuries in crash that totaled his car on Soldiers Field Road

Smashed up car in Brighton

Live Boston reports that a driver whose car went airborne before coming to a crashing halt in front of Party City on Soldiers Field Road around 6:45 a.m., suffered only minor injuries, as did the driver of another car he hit.

Witnesses reported they saw the blue vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed, one man estimating speed in excess of 80-100 mph, before the vehicle appeared to loose control, it then struck a curb, then a tree, and the went airborne before careening into the white vehicle that had been parked in the lot, taking out a light pole in the process.

The storefront isn't anywhere near the road! How did he end up all the way over there?

Not only that, but how does one only get minor injuries when the car looks like that?

They're there to absorb the impact by getting crushed in the process. Better for the car to look like that than your body...

I wouldn't shed any tears if the driver's body looked like that instead.

Street racing in the city is the equivalent of shooting a gun blindfolded.

He (most likely a guy?) narrowly escaped a Darwin Award.

But women almost never do stupid sh*t like this.

Highly unlikely that sedan was street racing

The deceleration force on the body must not have been too bad (yeah I watched a lot of Mythbusters). Probably bounced a few times. 80-100mph into a wall would have been a different result.

A lucky combination. He hit a bunch of stuff, a car, poles, etc. Each one slowed him down. Good airbags. Crumple zones (as someone mentioned). Seat belts. Luck. Whatever.

Unbelievably, my brother was the unlucky guy whose car got wrecked in this ‘accident.’ He said he pulled over to connect his phone to his car stereo when he saw a flash of motion and then WHAM!! he was surrounded by airbags. He rode in the ambulance to the hospital with the other guy to get checked out and said the dude reeked of weed, was stoned out of his mind. THAT is how you have minor injuries after a crash that catastrophic. Lots of drugs.

I mean, he is smiling but that's a big impact. Could be rigor mortis...

On a side note, I've on the roads a bit since I've been deemed an "essential worker." Has anyone else noticed how fast people are driving? With no traffic some people seem to trying to make the "best time ever" to their destinations. I'm surprised this type of accident is not happening more often.

Anecdotal here, but yes. 80-85 cruising speed on 95 mid-day. Also, a disease outbreak and fewer cars on the road did not cancel idiot drivers.

Due to the lack of traffic in the downtown / seaport / waterfront areas, I have witnessed multiple high speed idiots using the roads like race tracks in the middle of the day. Plenty of examples of ignoring traffic signals and overall driving like they are on set of a post-apocalyptic movie.

I take it you don't live on Western Ave.

But the composition of this photo is really amazing. The carnage. The smiling kids. Olaf. The Officer. It's a hell of a shot.

The toppled handicap parking sign is also a nice detail

I hope the driver didn't drop his phone.

I noticed that the traffic noise is generally down in my area, but there is this swarm of things that take flight in the night and make loud buzzing noises at 2am.

6:45 am could have meant coming home from a swarm ... or an overnight shift ... or going to work. In any case, somebody was testing the limits of their driving ability and got rather overconfident.
