Drive-thru coronavirus testing begins in Roxbury

The Whittier Street Health Center, 1290 Tremont St., in Roxbury, was scheduled to start drive-thru coronavirus testing this morning - for both its patients and others.

An appointment is required for the free testing, which is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Saturday. People seeking testing need to be running a fever and have a cough, shortness of breath or a sore throat.

These drive-through testing stations are good but in order for the Commonwealth to reopen, we're going to need to have a lot more testing and the tests need to be open to those who aren't experiencing symptoms. (Or a vaccine/treatment available.)

Getting a test should be as easy as getting a Dunkachino. (Or whatever they're now calling it.)

Do I have to rent a Zipcar? Life ain’t all about the burbs all the time

If so, you might not be aware where, exactly, Roxbury is, but, no, it's nowhere near a suburb.

I'm sure if you call Whittier Street, you can make arrangements to get tested by walking in, provided you actually meet their testing criteria, although I suspect that by asking this question, you are not within walking distance of either of their locations.

That was a strong, snide response to a perfectly legitimate question.

So many, if not all, of the announcements about coronavirus testing are all about drive-thru with nary a word testing access for non-car owners. It's been very frustrating and concerning for us non-car owners. Especially if we live alone. Under today's circumstances, not many people would volunteer to drive a cornavirus-like symptomatic person.

Yes, when one calls to be screened, one could ask about transportation (if one's fevered head is clear enough). Wonder what the answer would be.

But it is concerning and frustrating for seemingly only drive-thru testing to be dominating.

Dominating so much, that even you Adam, who normally does a though and accurate job with your posts, linked to a Whittier Street Clinic web page that does not even mention it being drive-thru.

Because that page specifically says:

Effective April 13th, 2020, we will be providing rapid testing for COVID19. It will be a drive-thru testing for Whittier and non Whittier patients.

As for the snideness, guilty! I've gotten that way after seeing numerous similar cracks here and elsewhere from concern trolls pretending to care about whatever group isn't specifically addressed by a specific initiative (I've seen it before with drive-thru testing announcements, but also stuff basically along the lines of "How DARE the city try to do something about [whatever it is] affecting Group X - what about people in Group Y?"

Still, given how anonymous this person was, I should perhaps have not assumed he or she was just a concern troll; maybe it really was an honest question, in which case I apologize, but really, talking about "suburban" anything in a discussion of an initiative on Tremont Street in Roxbury?

Drive through testing refers to it being fast and with minimal interaction with the staff at the site. It's not about the car.

That’s actually good to know. I assumed person needed to stay in car. Thanks:)

I would have assumed the same. Honestly, given what's involved in going to one of these sites for a symptomatic person, it would be really good if this was clarified.

So basically, Jenna doesn't give a rat's ass that people from Roxbury are FINALLY getting sorely needed help during this pandemic, doesn't even KNOW THAT ROXBURY is a part of BOSTON, just HATES people who drive cars so much that 'Jenna the, let's be honest ACTUAL, suburbanite' feels compelled to exploit a positive improvement for an under-served POC neighborhood to further her/his bicycle agenda! Talk about suburban privilege!!! Even my NH relatives know Roxbury is a part of Boston. How ignorant and out of touch can you be?!

Actually serve some of the most marginalized in Boston. Perhaps a quick Google search or peruse of their website and your comment wouldn't seem so tone-deaf.

Someone should ask him. I just got a great deal on a truck that I don't even need or use. I'll let him borrow it if he needs to.

There have actually been cases of people walking or biking being turned away from drive-thru testing facilities, anecdotally as I've seen it on twitter, for obvious public health reasons.

Also really poor advice on the social distancing side of things, big reason I have all but avoided using zipcar or getting in any car other than my roommates that is also staying at home.

So a lotta good this comment does other than dunking on people without car access?

If you haven’t noticed, Kiniopio has continued his anti car crusade from day 1. He deserves it, and people can still laugh in these times. He probably thinks you are the anti christ for the mere fact that you have ever used a zip car.

Meanwhile there are actually people in this city with car-free households, heavily reliant on public-transit and in demographics that are getting hit hardest by this pandemic.

But whatever, they obviously live rent free in your head, you just had to conjure them up.

And for what its worth, I believe I have happily shared my zipcar usage in comments before, haven't seen Kiniopio dunk on me for that.

Go up the escalators and take a right. With dink's on your right walk straight ahead and down the stairs. The Whittier Street Projects are right in front of you. Boston Police Headquarters is behind you.

Is down the street a bit, past the police HQ and on the other side of the street (so you could also get off at Roxbury Crossing).
