Brookline orders outdoor face covering starting Friday

Update: Headline changed, since the town is mandating you cover your face with something, not necessarily an N95 mask.

The town announced today that:

Effective Friday, April 17, anyone out in public in Brookline is required to wear a face covering over their nose and mouth, and residents are reminded that they should only be leaving home to purchase essentials or to get to essential jobs.

Officials left unanswered what happens to people found maskless on town streets, however.

Brookline face-mask recommendations.

Brookline officials report the town has had 148 confirmed Covid-19 cases, with four deaths.

Where do I pick up my government mandated mask?

clothes from the government, which also must be worn in public.

Like a scarf?

I am surprised that the advice is that strict. Even New York still says it's okay to go outside for exercise, though with a mask if you're going to be near other people. (That's statewide, and it means that anyone in New York City has to cover their face when they go outside.)

Massachusetts is 3rd in the nation for Covid-19 positive cases and you're surprised some Boston-area communities are implementing strict precautions? I for one am thrilled! Or I suppose you could go the Michigan route and protest in your car...

I am not *unhappy*. I am *surprised* that they are being stricter than New York which, in case you've overlooked this, has the most Covid-19 deaths as well as the most positive cases in the US, and more than most countries.

If you've lost a loved one, you're wondering what took so long.

She didn't "should" anything. YOU did. SHE said that she was surprised. That's all. Stop reading into it.

So, great. Where do I get one? I don't want to give Jeff Bezos any (more) money, and I don't sew. So where do I get a mask?

If you click on the link to the Brookline mask suggestions, you'll see they're not mandating N95 or surgical masks - a simple kerchief folded correctly will do.

Once there is overwhelming evidence that this method actually prevents transmission of COVID.

This is overkill. If people want to wear masks, great.

If people want to not wear masks, great.

If there are people who demand others wear masks because they do not feel safe being out around people without masks, that’s fine. The people who feel uncomfortable can stay home and have all of their goods delivered to their residence.

I look forward to walking around Brookline without a mask this weekend!

Yes! We've been using t-shirts and scarves so far. But if you want a nicer option and to support a small business, lots of Etsy users are getting into the mask game.

I hope Baker grows some fortitude and does this statewide the way NY does. I know Baker is more of a follower than leader so he'll probably wait till more people die and it becomes more common. Its sad to go into grocery stores and still see some customers refusing to think of the health of the workers there and wear masks. A statewide order would normalize wearing masks more and bring in more people. People still drink and drive knowing the death toll, so I'm not saying making masks mandatory will lead to everyone thinking of others health, but it will be an improvement.

A) enforcing it
B) government is starting to overreach - see today's protests in MI. Really starting to push the edge of civil liberties.

Keep it up and people will just start saying screw it and disobeying en masse even the common sense stuff like stay inside.

Great job everyone, the #ProjectGridlock delayed emergency vehicles.

You see the clip of protesters there whining about government overreach because they can't buy fertilizer or get their hair dyed? Cool stuff.

Totally worth risking public health.

But valid point about enforcement, doubly so when you've got Q Anon idiots throwing temper tantrums like that.

Just the reality of people push back when you nitpick.

They outlawed leaf blowers in my parents' town so it wouldn't spread the virus. Good thing they weren't here on Monday. The town would have to outlaw wind.

Leaf blowers are usually illegal because they are loud and a nuisance, not because they blow air.

But also, wind is naturally occurring. Leaf blowers are not.

Overkill if you ask me. Just like the masks (at least outdoors).

We lived in a place that used landscaping services. The services all used power equipment for everything, including leaf blowers. The things blow whatever is on the ground up into the air. That's dirt, mold, miscellaneous animal feces, everything. The outside sill of our kitchen window was covered with dirt, and it was 6 feet off the ground. One day, a clump of moss the size of a hockey puck was blown onto the roof of my car. Leaf blowers are a health hazard.

That is essential for people who are trying to grow some of their own food (even if they are not farmers).

As others have pointed out in that thread, stores in MI are selling seeds. Seems its just not as convenient, some talk of Walmart and Home Depot taping off certain section for safety concerns and oh its available for pick up.

Frankly, if you want to plant from seed in Michigan, you need to start them indoors in February or March - and a month ago, all the stores were fully open

Totally worth blocking emergency vehicles and risking public health.

Alright. This is Massachusetts, a commonwealth built on shame. Wear a mask if you don't want to kill anyone.

Can we start saying "Banned in Brookline" now?
I kid. I know it's a medical precaution not a morals violation.

The Transit Police in Philadelphia tried to enforce this rule and ending up dragging a gentleman off a bus. The rule was cancelled the next day. Why is it that the left hates the police but loves a police state.

up

The left does not like overly aggressive police tactics. In other cities, transit agents and police are handing out free masks to people who don't have them rather than tackling and arresting people. How civilized!

So glad this became an official policy and It's very telling that a measure mandated to keep everyone safe can be interpreted by anyone as a threat to personal liberties instead of an opportunity or obligation to do our part. The extent we are an I/me country vs an Us/we country is being revealed.

During World War II, Americans sacrificed daily to contribute to the war effort. Folks did their part, even doing without for greater good. During 9/11 ordinary heroes stepped up to rescue others or to overpower gunmen knowing the plane would crash just to save others...

And we are complaining about wearing a mask to prevent spread of disease.

It's funny that the right loves to complain about liberal "snowflakes" yet they are the first ones to complain when they are asked to sacrifice along with everyone else for the well being of society. They always complain about the "me generation" yet they seem to be the worst offenders.

I wonder if this includes driving through Brookline. I drive my brother to work over on Comm Ave in Brighton, cutting through Brookline along the way. I don't want to be pulled over but I don't get out of my car at all doing this.

Going to work (or bringing someone to work) is an essential trip, so that's fine.

Per Maura Healey's guidance to municipalities issued yesterday, no town or city can compel people to wear masks in public. They can only issue a guidance.
