A balanced boulder in Franklin Park

Charlie Rosenberg has been wandering around Franklin Park, photographing the Emerald Necklace's pendant, including this perfectly poised boulder.

...so popular it made it onto old time postcards of the park, some of which my grandparents had. It was called Balance Rock- a puddingstone boulder precariously balanced atop a rock outcropping. My grandfather and I went looking for it one day in the 70’s when we were in the park for one of his valiant efforts to teach me golf (the clubhouse had recently & suspiciously burned down, not a good omen...). We found it, but it was hidden by all sorts of brush (the park was in sad shape then). On the postcard, it was completely visible with nothing whatsoever around it

Geologists say it's a 'glacial erratic', but it was actually Druids.

It was called Balancing Rock, and with ample reason: It was a huge rock that balanced right near the edge of a rather large cliff that overlooked one of our neighbors' houses. It was a popular rock, frequented by many kids on our street, including my younger sister and myself.

Now if Plimouth Rock was more like this it would be easier to swallow as an historic site etc..

Is it me, or does that huge boulder look like it could roll down that hill? Is that a hill, or not? Sort of scary.

taken shortly afterwards, showing how precariously it appears to be balanced:
