Girdering for battle

Nathaniel Stinnett watched some of the demolition of the steel part of the Lechmere viaduct this morning. It's coming down for the realignment of the Green Line towards the new Not-Lechmere station being built as part of the fabled Green Line Extension.

I know people hate it, but I'll miss it. Reminds me when I was little and used to ride into the city with my father in the 70's when he was a tradesman before he retired.

Why would anyone hate it? It's one of the last sections of traditional elevated train in the Boston area.

The old steel elevated will come down between old Lechmere Station and the beginning of the concrete portion of the viaduct at the Gilmore Bridge area (across from the Museum of Science). New steel will be extended from the new GLX work to the concrete section. Many of the footings for the new steel were already poured under the old "el" sections. The concrete section will be rehabilitated as well over the next year. The new Lechmere station is already under construction across the street from the old one.

Buses that terminate at Lechmere now, will continue to do so for the next year or so with a shuttle bus connecting people to North Station. A dedicated bus lane from Lechmere to the Charles River Dam area (in front of the Museum of Science) will help move buses at peak times.

It was named for Lechmere Sales. Damn, I miss that place.

The origins of the chain date to 1913, when Russian immigrant and founder Abraham Cohen purchased a harness shop in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Cohen subsequently renamed it Lechmere Harness Shop for the district of Cambridge it was located in, Lechmere. As the automobile rose in popularity over the next decade, the store began selling tires and was renamed Lechmere Vulcanizing Company. When his children—sons Maurice, Philip, and Norman and daughter Nan—entered the business after World War II, it added sales of consumer appliances. In 1948, the company was renamed Lechmere Tire & Sales Company, and was incorporated.

Before the dig the elevated trains and highway felt like a big green dirty hug and I still sorta miss it.
