Mayor to South Boston beachgoers: Stop pissing in people's yards

Mayor Walsh said today he's been getting reports from residents along Day Boulevard that people are traipsing over from the beaches to use their yards as urinals.

Walsh said the city's been talking to DCR about possibly installing some portable toilets along the waterfront until the day the city re-opens the Curley Community Center, but said that in the meantime, people who can't hold their beer should stop drinking beer on the beach - which still remains illegal anyway.

The world's largest toilet at your feet and you cross the road to pee in somebody's yard?

Learning to swim is a pool, years of using pools.

You don't pee in the pool!

So it feels wrong to pee in water.

Just wade in a couple of feet...

Southie doesn't have enough toilets? South Boston?
Are you kidding @adamg?

Most of the public facilities are actually shut.

Or maybe people just like urinating in yards?

I hope they shut the L street with chains.
Can you still walk to Castle Island?

I know the snack stand is closed.

Is there a new generation of yuppies?

Yes, you can walk to and around Castle Island. You can even drive up now to Sullivan’s, which is open, and park. Highly recommend their root beer floats!

Don’t know about the yuppies. But, last time I was there, which was last week, there was a delightful mix of people enjoying the surroundings and the weather.

Has everyone in the middle of a pandemic forgotten WHY public restrooms remain closed. There is significant viral shedding in feces. Flushing toilets aersolizes tiny shit particles and throws them all over the room. Public restrooms are still a hazard.

If the beach is open, then public restrooms need to be provided. Certainly, there should be signage to acknowledge the risk.

yet when there are no bathrooms, people improvise. what do you expect?

But what I really mean is believable, because I actually expect government to be this horrible. Let's pick this apart:

1) People are peeing in yards on Day Blvd. Why? Because mammals urinate.

2) Why are they peeing in yards? Because the sanitary facilities are not accessible. I've been to Pleasure Bay (less rocky and with finer sand) twice this season already. The pisser inside the hockey rink is locked up, the sign advising bathroom-goers to use the one by the playground leads you to another locked bathroom. You have to get all the way over to the one by Sullivan's to heed nature's call.

3) The hockey rink is run by the state, I believe. I think the playground is also a DCR state park, so Marty can almost be absolved, since he doesn't appear to have the power to have them opened by his edict. He came thiiiiiiis close to being the moral superior on this, but like Mitch Williams, he blows it.

4)

Walsh said...people who can't hold their beer should stop drinking beer on the beach - which still remains illegal anyway.

What a complete (expletive) jerkoff. I observe our container laws when visiting our public beaches, and his on-the-record response to his constituents is this glib jackassery? Again, believable. I completely believe that the establishment Democrat is an out-of-touch jerk. The Bears are who we thought they were. Reward this obnoxious (expletive) with a vote again. Keep sucking.

I won't even get into what an obnoxious law that is, because it will muddy my even more important point that I've made, which is that your government is so awful, it can't even keep a toilet open or treat with you civility.

But without government, who would have one entity close the toilets at the beach on a summer day, and then have the other entity accuse you of breaking laws after you've relieved yourself?

Nowhere do you suggest the gov't shouldn't be involved in offering this service to the public for free, oh no. The best mind the Libertarians can offer the U-Hub commentariat is mad because he doesn't have enough free options from the government for when he needs to pee.

The answer is of course that there should be pay toilets which are cleaned every 20 minutes by a well paid staffer. Unfortunately, I assume freedom loving, government hating cheapskates would still pee in the yards of private property owners instead of paying so the business isn't sustainable. Ergo, the government needs to provide that service and now they are to blame when a weak bladdered Randian has too much coffee.

Serious question Will - do you wear a mask when you are near other people and when you go inside a public location like a store or cafe?

A lack of free-to-the-end-user piss options in a vacuum, I'm mad that they exist, but are locked up, and that we got a condescending response from an elected leader. Walsh could have just shut up and said it's a DCR/state matter, but didn't.

The toilet's already built. Just unlock it. Need to hire cleaners? Defund the police.

And to answer your question, I carry a scarf. The next time I'm within 6' of a stranger without moving in public will be the first since this all started, so I would put the scarf on. I also put it on when entering any business, because it's Libertarian to respect the private property of others. Also, it's kind.

What is a mask protest? If the science says six feet in public doesn't call for one, and you don't want to, then your argument is against the scientist, right? When do you have a fight against government in wearing a mask except for when you enter a government building? The libraries and the courts are closed, aren't they? You really only have to suck it up at the RMV then, no?

That's what I thought you meant it means.

I'd pass on a hockey rink everyday because no one taught me to stop. Washington Street, Roxbury, MDC ice Skating Rink never had staff to teach. I just slammed into the boards.

Rink is closed. Park bathroom is open. I pass by it every day. None of this matters, because people at M Street beach aren't going to walk up there to use the facilities. They'll just continue to piss on private property.

Those lattice type metal cages they have along the Seine in Paris and on the canals in Amsterdam could help the problem. (Tinkle, tinkle, tinkle as it slowly drips out the pipe and into the water while others can only see your feet...)

that was installed in Manhattan as a test case. It was entirely automatic and cleaned itself after EVERY use.

So the cry of "oh but we'll need to pay attendants" is a moot point.

You'd still get messed up an arrive in jail but you can get out sooner if you have the right paperwork. An FBA card disqualify's you.

The mayor taunting an increasingly poor and depressed populace was not necessary.

If so, I have so many things to say, but I'll just leave it at this: it's better to be pissed off, than pissed on.

Yeah, Marty's no help in this, but - this needs to be laid at the feet of the DCR and ultimately Baker. The state opened its park without the proper facilities.

my City Point home on three sides. I used to camp out in a lawn chair on the day to dissuade stinko parade-goers from using my front lawn as a pissoir. Easy holiday guard duty: gentle sunshine most years, music, a book, a cocktail or three. It was the steering-wheel lock approach: "This car has The Club: find an easier one to steal."

The yard was cement when I got the place, and my days of street hockey as a leisure activity were long past. It took a lot of back-breaking labor to turn it into something green and more private. (The project exponentially improved my respect for jackhammer operators. My brain felt rattled for weeks afterward.)

I'll fertilize my own hard-won lawn, thanks.

I've never understood how you're supposed to know which parkland allows urination, and where you're stuck holding it if there's no bathroom.

White Mountain National Forest: yes
Boston Common: no

What about all the parks in between?

It doesn't help that there's no actual law against voiding where prohibited. They charge you with open and gross lewdness, which I think is a terribly inappropriate charge if you weren't doing something sexual, which urinating (usually) isn't.

If they want to make peeling illegal, they should make the effort to pass a law against it. And the penalty should fit the crime: you should have to carry a bucket of water from the nearest tap to rinse away the smell. And absolutely no sex offender registration.

This isn't a new trend. It's been going on for years. Even when the Curley Center was open people would cross Day Boulevard to relieve themselves in the alleys and yards across from the beach.
That beach is hugely popular. Despite the fact that alcohol consumption on the beach is prohibited, little enforcement occurs. This encourages that behavior. There is a need for something to remedy the current situation. Porta-Potty's would be a good start.
With the closure of the Curley Center for the next couple of years coming up, it's time for the city and DCR to get their act together.
The mayor's admonition to those with little regard to the beach's abutters is lame. I doubt many of the M Street beachgoers were watching His Honor's press conference. The current situation is unacceptable.

Just a hunch that it's not "people" peeing in people's yards, it's people with penises.

But public toilets are an important thing to have more of for everyone's comfort and sanitation.

These were designed by Portland to be low maintenance and high volume. Nobody wants to be in a port-a-potty any time of year but particularly in summer. And we all know how important hand washing is.
