Only seniors to be allowed back at MIT this fall

The MIT Tech reports. The news comes a day after Harvard announced only freshmen and some other students would be allowed back. Both schools, meanwhile, now have to figure out what to do about international students the government wants to kick out.

It's like Herr Cheeto is looking for any excuse to expel all foreigners from the country. I wish we could retroactively apply some of that to his grandfather, and for that matter, his wife.

MIT and Harvard are filled with a disproportionate number of students from China

Many of those students are here for purely legitimate education reasons at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Some want to become American Citizens and have a chance at the American Dream.

Some are here for what could artfully be termed "Espionage." They are top-notch intellectually, often quite fluent in English and are fully supported by the Chinese Communist Party and so their pretense is a boon to the U's with no apparent down-side.

However, if they not actively involved in a laboratory or practice oriented education -- where they have to be on the campus either for exercises or research -- and are just staying in the US to ostensibly take on-line classes -- then why are they here?????

Don't bother to call this a right-wing conspiracy as we've had numerous students, post-doc researchers, and even professors arrested for stealing, or transferring without-rights intellectual property in the past 6 months including a Harvard Full Professor [Charles M. Lieber, chemist and pioneer in the field of nanoscience and nanotechnology].

Note that there are very few Chinese Students taking courses in: 19th Century American Literary Criticism, Labor Movement during the Gilded Age, or the proper use of pronouns in the Antebellum South.

Note further that Edx and MITx enable a remote MIT education to anyone anywhere including some virtual laboratories

Note even further that for every Chinese Student who returns to China -- there is an opportunity for an American Student of: Chinese, Indian, Greek, Hispanic, Iranian, Brazilian, Native-American, Japanese, Swedish, Samoan, Micronesian, German, Arab-American, French, Irish, Polish, Italian, Vietnamese, Armenian, Turkish, Lebanese, Cuban, Jewish-American, or Afro-American, etc., --- background --- to get an MIT education

Wow. Just, wow.

The Trump administration goes after a few researchers for supposed espionage, and from that you conclude that all Chinese students, and by extension all international students, should be kicked out of the country to make room for more real Americans?

Your head is filled with a disproportionate amount of bigotry.

...is that he's doing this as a ploy to force colleges and universities to "open" completely (thus, presumably, validating his "open" narrative in time for the election but not in time for the consequences).

Make as many people in "liberal" states unhappy as possible. Anything they support, he will be against.

Four of his five kids did not have both parents born in the US.

Tsk tsk.

His racist advisors have proposed such a standard for automatic citizenship.

Please stop using the racist term
'anchor babies' -- it's nasty and hateful... educate yourself! Thanks!

Could the schools set up special low-risk in-person classes for international students? Something like they meet with a professor for a one-on-one discussion once a month. Harvard already has plenty of courses described as "supervised reading and research".

MIT is closing cook-for-yourself dorm kitchens, and making everyone buy a meal plan.

Closing shared kitchens is definitely a good idea. But I think the better alternative would be eliminating the stupid Cambridge law against microwaves in dorm rooms. I don't see how a microwave could possibly cause any problems in a dorm, especially since every single off-campus apartment in the city has one.

College students tend to overload circuits when there aren't enough outlets in the room. And microwaves have a big draw. And can start fires if used improperly. Multiply that by the number of rooms in the building and you get a law like that. It's a pretty common restriction in dorms in general. Almost certainly affects the insurance rate for the school.

Then how do off-campus apartments manage with so many microwaves?

If overloaded circuits are the problem, shouldn't that be handled by circuit breakers?

Lots of things draw as many watts as a microwave. Why aren't hair dryers and desktop PCs decked out for gaming (left on all the time, not just for the 3 minutes it takes to make ramen) burning down dorms as well?

Even an insurance company says, "Microwave ovens are a relatively safe way to cook, because they don’t involve open flames or exposed heated surfaces", and they're the most paranoid and overcautious organizations around.

In fact, some local schools allow microwaves, but only if you buy an expensive unit with a fridge attached so it can turn off the fridge while the microwave is running. If you have no fridge at all, the microwave isn't allowed.

I'm trying to decide whether
(a) July 7 is a bit late to notify students of an early start to the fall, or
(b) September 1 can't be that much of a change as a start date

With COVID outbreaks all over the US etc., why are we entertaining the idea that ANY students should be able to come back to the dozens of college campuses in Boston-Cambridge this fall? Our COVID numbers are good enough now that we may be able to open K-12 schools in some fashion this fall- but this definitely won’t be possible if we get a COVID surge due to all of the out of town arrivals. College attendance is arguably “optional” and suited to distance learning. K-12 education is not optional, and distance learning, especially for K-6, is a joke. No college campuses should reopen if it’s going to come at the expense of K-12. Gov. Baker, Mayor Walsh, are you listening?

There can't be that many 65+ year old students at MIT...can there be?
